Just looking for some input on whether I should get a leftover 2003 Quad cab with the 3.9 or wait for the 2004's with the 3.7 installed. Also how is the general reliability of the 3.9 ? I know it's been around a long time and it is really a chopped 318 which is a V8 legend . Also any input on the 42LE auto tranny that they put behind the 3.9 . Currently I can get a 2003 Quad for around $20000 after rebate . I've looked around and there is no 4.7 Quad 4 X 2's to be found , all 3.9's .

I concur. The 3.9 simply isn't enough for the Quad, especially with the gas mileage it gets pushing around all of the weight. The 3.7 should solve both of those problems fairly well. I have a 3.9 and the engine hasn't given me any problems, but it's not that old. I can't really speak to the reliability but I've heard it's pretty good.

The 3.7 run's a lot like the unchoped 4.7

They rev higher to make the power look at the
specs

Choped 318
3.9
175 hp @ 4400 rpm
230 ft. lbs. @ 3200 rpm

Choped 4.7
3.7
210 hp @ 5,200 rpm
235 ft. lbs. @ 4,000

I have not seen one in a Dak yet but they are
going to start using them from what I hear.

Just have to wait untill they come out and hit
a dealer and test one, I go to the dealers all
the time and test drive trucks's its a fun way
to spend a Sat.

Seen one in a Jeep and the guy said it ran good

I was in West Palm Beach this weekend and went by a Dodge dealership. They had a 04 CC Sport Plus with the 3.7 and 4 speed auto. So talked the salesman into to letting me test drive it. I must say the 3.7 does seem to have a bit more pickup that my 3.9,( but it sounds alot differant for some reason) Also noticed that the 04s are back to front disc/ back drum brakes.

I heard that the 3.7 was just a 5.7 Hemi missing two cylinders and a smaller bore.

The Quad Cab weighs too much for any V6. Get the 4.7 V8, you will be much happier.

Someone needs to tell Dodge that we want the SXT package with the 4.7 v8. I tried to buy a 4.7 Quad with the options of an SXT but they wouldn't give me any package discount on a special order nor did they have anything close to the SXT in the other package options. I ended up with the Quad SXT with the 3.9 after looking at all the loaded Quads with 4.7 and many other options I didn't want nor could afford. Closest thing would have been $2,000 more than what I paid.

For the love of God if you need speed by a V-8!!! I have owned 2 dakotas a 94 and recently a 2000 model. I love the 3.9, I test drove a Liberty with the 3.7 and hated it. It sounds to me like a damn Japaneese made motor from the movies at high RPM's. You can't work on them as well as the 3.9 (spark plugs etc. are just not real accessable). Anyhow, I just think that the 3.7 is not a real step up, I wish they would put a damn Hemi in a Dakota.

I had a 92 dak with the 3.9. Drove it real hard till 90000 on the O.D. then I traded it. Never had a problems other than the ones I caused, such as mud in the distributor...but it ran real strong even with those miles on it. And of course they are easier to work on, theres probably more perf. parts for them then the 3.7 for obvious reasons. I also had a 96 3.9 at one time, and swore my 92 ran better, but probably because it was a 5spd, the 96 was an auto.

Rumors have it that the 2005 Dakota RT (out in early 2004 with a complete redesign) will come with the 5.7 Hemi! That should put the sport truck market on it's ear!
