Can under gapped plugs cause black smoke during hard acceleration? How can this be corrected if this is not the problem? Any ideas?

Why would your plugs be gaped small. Take them out
and check them.

Sounds like your running rich or this truck was
driven to slow to long and is all carboned up.

When is the last time you replaced your O2 sensor
they recomend every 60,000.

A bad IAT or engine temp sensor telling the comp
its running cold will also make it run rich

I thought that the black smoke meaned RICH, so maybe the plugs were under gapped. I replaced the engine temp sensor not too long ago. If the O2 sensor was bad and the IAT was bad would'nt I get a code? This is only happening at WOT.

No you would not necessarily get a code.

It sounds more like a carbon build up, how long
have you had the truck did it just start doing it.

Need more info

Only happens at WOT

I have had the truck about 6mos. It has 120,000 miles on it. I only notice the black smoke when I really get on it. I was thinking of putting in some different plugs, I am currently using the Champion truck plugs.

Sounds like just a lot of carbon, after you WOT
it a few times and more often it will probly
clear out.

Who ever you got the truck from probably never
drove it hard.

We have been having very good luck with the
Autolight plugs.

Truck plug would be A5224 extended tip
regular plug A3924

If you go with the AP platnuim tip you can gap
them .005 bigger

I would stick with the regular heat range what
most people don't tell you is the have lots of
mods than 1 colder will work better

Larry,

Does it matter on what tip to use? Does that extended tip do better? What would you use with no mods to get the best combustion without the possible pinging?

Thanks again

Wide Open Throttle

The truck plug with the extended tip will run just
a little colder than the regular tip almost like
half a heat range

What the dealers do when people complain about
pinging is drop the extended tip champian truck
plug in. All the newer trucks now come with the
truck plug

If your getting piston ping go with the 5224
if not the 3924 will run just fine, I have
found the extended tip does seam to run just
a little better in most trucks

I bumped up my timing a few degree's and am
getting some ping so I am going to try the
truck plug myself, they do not make a 5223
so I am going to try the champ extended 1 range
colder and see if it helps but on a stock truck
stay with the same heat range.
