Subject: Exhaust manifold bolts breaking IP: Logged
Message: I have a 95 dodge dakota sport with the mighty 3.9 engine, with about 110K miles. I have owned this truck for about 2 years now and need to figure something out. When I bought it I found one of the exhuast manifold bolts broken, repair cost $200. Just recently I looked at my engine and there are 2 more broken off that will need fixing. Has anyone ever heard of this poblem before or is just my truck. I have a friend with a 97 ram 1500 with the 3.9 and this happened to him too. He repaired all the bolts and that cost about a grand. Is this what I should do with my truck or just get the ones that are broken repaired?
Thanks for any info!!

Message: It's a common problem since they don't use gaskets on the exhaust manifolds... What I'm gonna do if mine start breaking is have headers put on instead.

Message: Kevin,
If the manifolds are not leaking don't worry
about it to much.
But if you plan on putting a set of headers on
than you will need to repair them.
You can drill and try an esyout but I have found
that usually don't work unless you are lucky.
The best way to fix them is to get some left hand
drills just be sure you get as close to center as possible
the best way to do that is first remove the manifold
and file or grind the broken stud flat, than put the
manifold back on and use a transfer punch right in
the hole and mark it than mark it again with the manifold
off so you have a good mark.
Now drill it with a smaller drill first and work your way
up to the correct left-hand drill size, a lot of times using
the left hand drill they will screw out on the end of the
drill. Than retap the hole.
Be sure you have the drill in reverse when you use the
left-hand drill
A 90 degree angle drill works good just have someone
stand back a little and eyeball to be sure you drill as straight
as you can. or use a little square to line yourself as best
you can.
They are a pain no doubt about that.
I cant remember who it was that suggested I use my
outlook express to check my spelling before I post
Who ever it was Thank You man I sure cant spell
worth a dam never could.
