208000,1994 still had good power and burned no oil. Threw a timing chain and ruined the engine. My new one 1994 has 143000 and runs great.

155k+ 1997 CC 2wd. I've got a noise in the engine, and after reading the posts in this thread along with some others, I suspect the Timing chain and gear set. No worries, it's well within my abilities....just to durn cold outside to tackle that problem in my open air garage. Just can't seem to get that infrared heater ( the sun ) to get the temps over freezing at the moment...

Even the factory mopar techs can not explain
why the cam sits .050 lower in the block than
the 318

rattle and jumping

Always use the tensioner when you replace the
chain and gears and both should be replaced
not just the chain the gears wear also

mopar
hughes engines
and summitracing
all have the tensioner

Do it right the first time

The first time I read that advice Larry, I took it to heart. No worries, I don't dig into things like that to only do the job half way ( I'd consider changing the cam if I had the time to dig into the top end more ).

I'm curious as to why these seem to wear out the timing chains like they seem to do and when you mention that the cam sits lower throws up a red flag. That is rather odd.

Either way, I'll be doing the timing chain gear set and the tensioner and replacing the water pump while I'm at it.

How difficult is it to pull the harmonic balancer on this thing? I've got a 3 pronged H. Balancer puller that uses bolts..will that work or do I need to pick up a gear puller with reversable 'hooks' so I can snag the inside of the pulley ( I know I can't pull it from the outside of the pulley or I'll ruin it ).

Think about this:
Do an oil analysis.
You'll have detailed information of the condition of your oil, but it will mean nothing. 20,000 miles later, do it again. Now you have something to compare with the first, and you can tell if excess wear has been taking place.

Story to prove the point;
My torque converter was causing a surge, while on cruise, as it un-locked and locked.
Four dealers and two transmission shops (yes, AAMCO) said I needed a new transmission.
The tech at Oil Analyzers said that, not only was there little wear, there was less than normal wear; there was nothing mechanically wrong.
Went with the tech.
That transmission has 534,000 miles on it today. Did have solenoid failure at 450,000 miles, proving they too, will last longer than the ones in too-soon junked vehicles.

i had to get a new car, one which gets better fuel economy. i like my truck, i mean i lowered it and spent way too much money on sound system, but hey, ya only live once right? anyways, i was driving home 2 years ago and i was 100 miles under 200,000 miles and the transmission just crapped out, no noises, just stopped in middle of road. Do not have your fluids changed at a "Quick lube" shop, they did not put the filter on my transmission pan, so when i got home, it all leaked out. I have no ac either, 700 dollar job for condensor to be replaced. Even with this high of mileage its still got good pull. Although it is slow as molasses.

My '93 has 138,000 miles.
It is being used a daily commuter right now, but my hope is that in the next year we will get a mini-van for the wifey and I can start using our '92 Toyota Camry for the daily commute because it gets much better gas milage and the truck will be used on an as-needed basis only.
