Message: My 88 Dakota w/ 3.9, throttle bottle injection, (2) wheel drive is stalling intermittently. It was stalling a few months back and thanks to this forum I replaced the egr valve which solved that problem. It has been running fine but about three weeks ago would stall on the highway and then while coasting on the side of the road to pull off would fire back up again and then run fine. Lately it has been doing that same thing around town and occassionally I will come out of a store and it will not start for a few minutes. My local parts guy said that maybe the module, fuel pump or coil were to blame . I purchased a coil but still seems to be acting up. It idles a little bit rough and sometimes in the morning when warming up the truck before work it will just die and then when I restart it it starts right back up. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
It didn't seem to me that a fuel pump would be dieing over three weeks. Also when it does start back up it usually idles high before dropping back down to a smooth idle. When applying the accelerater at this time it makes it occilate.
Thanks in advance Arnie

Message: hey arnie!
try replacing your temp sensor,
if that doesn't work, replace your hall effect pickup in the distributer.......
hope this cures it!

Message: Check the pulse ring underneath the hall effect pickup as well. If it is loose, replace it. I had exactly the same problems, as well as poore gase milage and eventually backfiring, until a mechanic told me about this problem.

Message: First thing I would do is perform a self-diagnostic check on it using the CHECK ENGINE lamp. Go here:

See if any fault codes in the computer show up.

Message: It sure could be the fuel pump. Also the fuel filter may be getting clogged up pretty bad. Check your ditributor like David said also. Buddy of mine had the same problem and replaced the pick-up coil, and it works fine now.

Message: Whats the difference between a hall effect sensor and the pickup coil???
I'm having a stalling problem also.
I replaced the fuel pump, no luck. Should I try the pickup coil?

Message: Probably the reluctor/interuptor UNDER the Hall Effect PU. I replaced whole distributor in mine and o2 sensor and it runs great now.
Interuptor shouldn't have any play(side to side movement in it). Pull out hall effect to check it. New dist. around $80 at Auto Zone.

Message: I've stumped three mechanics on my truck already, there are several things you could repalce, and I have.. it gets expensive, I have the exact same problem... no one seems to know... but it's starving for gas on account of something. The distributer pick up has helped some people with a similar problem, so has a full tune up for others... I've replaced the distributer and done the full tune up to no avail... my suggestion is to go to a mechanic you trust and say "look this is gonna take a while to figure out... please to what you can..." if he can't help ask him for suggestions...
Good Luck, and I hope it ends up a cheaper fix than mine.
