Message: While your in there it's a good idea to replace all the bearings as well. THe place you get your gears from should have a rebuild kit available.

Message: I agree with Jon but it is not an easy job for the home mechanic but if you decide to tackle it make sure which spacer comes from which side. They are different sizes. When reassembling the rearend, the spacers and carrier must go in at the same time. It can be done but its time consuming. Be careful with the spacers and DO NOT try to drive them in. They are cast and will shatter easily. When finished the ring and pinion should have just a little freeplay. When moving the pinion it should move just a little bit and not bind

Message: I was going to have a shop do it...any idea
how much it would cost and would the replace
the bearings as well? Would this be a
sufficient source of h.p.?

Message: Well you wont gain any HP but5 you might notice a little faster get up....I replaced the bearings in my Grand Cherokee and it only cost me about $50 or so for parts

Message: Last i checked most places were charging $400 to set up a rear end. Some places might do it cheaper but your better off finding a speed shop that does them a lot since there are not easy.

Message: Just a suggestion, but I would think about a 4:10 rear, I have a 3:91 and it is not much different than my sons 3:55 or 3:23 rear, whatever a 2003 Dak has.

Message: I was going to get the 3.91 for mpg
reasons...cause i will lose mpg with that rear
end but i will lose alot more with the
4.10...right? Otherwise i would get the 4.10
and not 3.91 but then again my father said i
would probably beat a vortec v6 s10 with a
3.91 gears...but i dunno....any idea on how
much quicker the acceleration is between a
3.55 and a 4.10 gears?

Message: Switching from 3.55 to 3.91 you would gain around
.2 in the quarter mile not to much.
Your rpm would run about 200 rpm higher and you
gas milage would not be affected much at all, I
went to the 3.91 gears with my stroker truck and
the gas milage did not seam to change at all but
the truck is a little faster.
The gear change got me .3 in the quarter mile I
used to run 14.9 14.7 now the best of 3 runs at
Union Grove sanctioned 1/4 mile I hit 14.4 at 97
My truck already has just about everything done I
can do to it so I will probably never be any
faster than I am right now.
It is a nice upgrade over the 3.55, I just got the
whole rear assy's from a bone yard and bolted them
in.
You can change the gears but you need some special
mesuring tools to set the pinion right so the
gears mesh right or it will wine and not last to
long. Not just a bolt on mod I would not recomed
the average person do the job unless you know
someone with the tools needed to do the job.

Message: Larry...Thanx! Umm just another question i
can feel the difference with those gears
right...but then again if i got 4.10 gears would
that be alot better or just a waste of gas?

Message: Yes you can feel the differance quit a bit.
If you plan on doing a lot of racing go with the
4.10 they will knock your milage down from 1 to
3 mpg depending on what you have done to the
motor.
Just wanting a little better excelleration and
power without effecting the mileage to much go
with the 3.91 I like the 3.91 and what it did
for my truck because of all the mods I have it
really helped my low end, I lost some low end from
moding the intake manifold and porting the heads

Message: Thanx again Larry...i undertsand the loss of low-end with ur intake. I do stret racing...and if i get 3.91 my acceleration will be quick enough by ur standards but all i have done is a k&n drop in and a 40 series flowmaster exaust...so will it still help alot or should i go woth the 4.10's?

Message: Don't have a clue how the transmission came up here.
The S-10's usually came with a 3.54 3.73 ratio
To me they were dogs, my oldest brother had one
and I could run circles around him, pull more
off road better out do his S-10 in anyway with
my Dak, Deep snow he may as well have stayed home
and saved me the trouble of getting the chain out
from behind my seat to pull him out.

Message: I just did my 4.10 install with a Trac-Loc this weekend. Didn't notice much difference in how it drives, although it does take off quicker. The traction is the now which is nice. I am waiting for a little bit before getting on the highway. I still need to get the speedo calibrated.
