Subject: Shifting into 3rd gear tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1992 dakota sport, 3.9l, lately the truck has not been shifting into 3rd gear, most of the time it doesnt do it but it has been doing it more often. It usually shifts into 3rd at around 40-45 mph. when the truck comes to a stop it either drops rpm's drastically to around 500 or stalls, so I beleave that its got to be some kind of electrical problem or some kind of solenoid or sensor. Any thoughts???
Thanks Guys,
Josh

Message: When is the last time you changed filter and fluid
Are you saying 3rd gear or into overdrive. there
is a selinoid for overdrive lockout.
what state of tune is the motor in a bad battery
could cause that voltage dropping at low rpm.
explain a little better

Message: I beleve its thrid gear because it only shifts twice from the start. As far as the filter and fluid goes i am not sure when it was changed last. As far as the engine tune, I have to put in some stuff like a cap and rotor then plug wires and some plugs, and change the oil and fuel filter. The battery is a die hard, I don't think its bad.
Thanks

Message: if the fluid looks a little reddish-brown change it and the filter. also, just cuase the battery is a die hard doesn't mean it's in good condition or the connections could be dirty. do the tune up also and see what happens.

Message: there's not much electrical in the '92. that's when the A500 was still hydraulic.
could be worn clutch plates. How many miles on tranny & where are you located? Or could be bad speed sensor. Try pulling the codes to see if there are any.
This should help explain:
http://dakota-truck.net/CODES/codes.html
When you change the fluid/filter how clogged is/was the magnet in the Tranny pan? Gray/blck "mush" on the magnet comes from your clutch plates if there is more than what the magnet could accumulate it's a bad thing. Small amount of tiny metal flakes are normal wear & tear. Large metal chunks/flakes are a bad bad thing.
After you change fluid/filter pull off the return line (driver side) from the tranny cooler on the bottom of the radiator before you start the truck the 1st time. Take an empty Qt bottle (preferably clear) and catch the wasted fluid, It should be pumping at least 1qt every 10 sec at idle. This gives you a chance to check your fluid flow and gets the old & contaminated fluid out of the cooler, Torque Converter and lines.
Good luck & let us know what happens.
