Subject: Loss of oil psi update IP: Logged
Message: After losing oil psi several times on my 99 Dakota 3.9l. 49k 2wd..
I started reading this forum looking for answers.
I would like to thank those that responded to my questions.
The problem was a clogged screen on the pick up tube, and I mean CLOGGED with sludge.
I put on a high flow oil pump $53, gasket $22, oil filter and 41/2 qts of oil $7. (Auto Zone)
2 days to get it apart and 1 day to get it all back together.
I never was able to get the oil pan off, but I was able to work it out of the way to get to the pump.
The exhaust y pipe took a little cussing other than that it was straight forward.
Oh ya my 4 month old German Shepard kept taking off with the bolts. Thank God I was able to find them all.

Very unusual to have that much sludge in your pan
with only 49k

Message: Glad to hear that! Hopefully it will fix my Bro-In-Laws truck also. I don't think he even checked when he replaced his oil pump. When I pulled the Plenum the top of the head was covered in sludge. We did an engine flush but it will take a couple times to clean up the guts.

Message: I have always used Mobil 10-30 in my cars. I think it's one the best motor oils on the market.
That's not including synthetics.
I bought the truck with 42k on it. So I don't know how it was taken care of before me. I do know the truck was repoed and sold at a car auction to a local car dealer where I bought it. So I guess you could say I was the 2nd owner.
And yes I was very surprised to see so much sludge build up. I have never had an oil pump problem in all my years of owning and working on cars. And I've owned quite a few cars over the years.
I would be interested to find out if the engine is original. While working on it I didn't find any signs of a engine swap.
