Bought a dakota from a dealer and noticed the dipstick was brown. Is it possible that at one time the oil had not been changed for a while.

i think that might be a over heating of the motor at one time or the other, stain caused by burnt oil possibly. if its and old truck, could just be a time stain, or the preowner never changed the oil, or all the above.if it runs good i wouldnt worry, just change oil every 3 g's.

Mine is the same way on my 95....It looks like someone painted it or something.....It didnt happen from the engine or anything...The way mine looks, if the engine did it the engine would be toast

Have the same thing on my '01 with about 40k miles. Noticed it around 6k miles - assuming just a heat issue.
