Subject: Engine & Tranny Swap Possible?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, I have a 4x4 96 dakota w/ 3.9 AUTO. The engine is going to the dump fast. (nocking worse every day.) and the Tranny is toast. 210K on engine. Body of the truck in mint shape. I have a 3.9 engine from a 91 dakota with only 80K on it. Would this fit in without changing much? Also I have sitting here a 4x4 Tranny that came out of a 87 dakota. WOuld the two then fit in fine or just the engine? I want to change them but want to make sure they will fit and work before tearing the truck apart. Someone please let me know. Thanks Any info is appreciated.

PLZ don't attempt it~! The tranny is a Hydralic, yours is Electric. (I learned from experience, I tried to put a '95 tranny in my '93 truck)

The engine, if it is still the Magnum you will be able to use it. I would make sure your existing engine is shot 1st...

If you have about 5-7 Days you could put your Dak Down here's my suggestion.....

Pull your existing heads and take them to a Machine shop, e-Mail me if you want the recomendations for head work.

Knocking sounds like a worn/shot Rod bearing. Tear the block down and if it's only the bearing and the rod is not damaged keep the one's you got and replace the bearings. you may need to take in your crank and the rods to have them tested for balance and straightness, the machine shop will measure them to make sure you don't need oversized bearings.

It will likely take about 2 days for the machine work and about 3 days to get all your parts together. Assembly and re-Installation shouldn't take more than 6-8 hrs.

Where are you located?
Good Luck,
Shank

1 more thing I just remembered....

IF you use the '91 engine you are going to have to use your existing plenum assembly and exhaust manifolds.

Until '94 they still used the 2 line fuel system for overflow return and still had the EGR system. In '95 they switched over to a single fuel line and dropped the EGR.

If you can't have your Dak down that long you could do a swap in 1 day....

Pull the plenum assembly and manifolds off your engine, Get the Intake gasket set (comes with Left & Right gaskets and Belly Pan gasket) Good oppurtunity to Overhaul the Plenum (Bellypan gasket is a common failure) re-install your Plenum and Manifolds on the '91 and drop it back in. This will give you some time to rebuild your other engine.

Good luck & e-mail me if you need any more help,
Shank

Just got back from fishing. Truck made it to the Chunka Musky Hole. :~> Thank you Shank. You just saved me a lot of wated time. I think I will rebuild the entire engine and have a freind that rebuilds trannys do mine. Was thinking about it but was not sure. Wanted a easy way out but I think I would have regretted it in the long run of just swaping junk for better junk. Again thank you for your info.
