Subject: Engine Oil question...

Okay, I know this is a Dodge dakota form, but I need another opinon before I go make a fool out of myself.

my mom went by herself to get an oil change in her SUV (2001 BMW X5) I think the garge saw her coming. they put on wiper blades, and for the 24 in driver side they charged $24.99. these are just generic blades, does that seems high to anyone other then me?
regardless, in the owners book, it says to use only 5w 30 all synthic oil. the word only appears in big bold letters. when the people did the oil change (we were trying out a new garage we heard about by word of mouth) he put in 10w 30.
should I go back and have them fix the mistake, or should I not worry about it?

I guess the big reason I am so pissed off, is because for two wiper blades, and the oil change the total came to $149.98...
any ideas??
thanks guys

Monkey_Man,

VISCOSITY..in the general term is defined as " a fluids resistance to flow". it's a measure of the internal friction of the fluid or the resistance to the movement of one layer of molecules relative to an adjacent layer.

THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER.. is the Cold Cranking measurement, made at low temperatures, using a concentric cylinder viscometer to predict the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.

The measuring devices, or viscosmeters, most often used are in the form of close-fitting concentric cylinders. The fluid being evaluated is placed between the cylinder walls, the outer cylinder is held stationary and the inner cylinder is rotated. The speed of rotation is measured for a given force to calculate the viscosity, most commonly reported in cp or centipoise units. Also known as Absolute Viscosity.

THE HIGHER (BIGGER or SECOND #, as in "-30") NUMBER...is commonly measured in capilary tubes, in which the time for a fixed volume of fluid to flow through the tube under gravity at operating temp (100c)is measured and reported as cSt or centistokes. This is used most commonly to report the normal operating viscosity of motor oils or the higher number.
--------------------------------------------------
When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.

The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:

-20 C for 10W-
-25 C fpr 5W-
-30 C for 0W-

It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.
--------------------------------------------------
Bottom Line, unless you live in the Artic, you are fine. Otherwise, you can switch to the "5w-" oil on the next change.

RE: Wiperblades,
I switched to BOSCH Wiper Blades (which I sell on my website), and the retail is $21 for one, and $24 for the other.

Unless your mother asked for new wiper blades they took advantage of her. They are supposed to ask first.

I agree with Steve, As long as it was 10W30 SYNTHETIC and you don't plan on driving across the Polar Cap anytime in the next 5,000 miles.

If they put 10W30 Penzoil (or any traditional Dino oil) I would immediately have them change it!!!!!!!

Thank you both for responding.
if it was my truck I wouldn't care, but where as me paid close to $45,000 for this car, and it moves really fast! It is also getting up there in miles, and I just don't want anything to happen it.
The oil gets changed about every 9,000 to 12,000 miles depending on what the computer in the car tells us. it's pretty high tech stuff.
well, thank you again.
enjoy!
