Is it overheating

Backflush and new thermostat and see what happens.

It's overheating and I replaced the thermostat to see if that would work because I thought it might be stuck shut. But it's still overheating and the motor is still hot and the radior is cool. Could it be the radiator or would it be more likely to be the waterpump?

water pump. If you replaced the thermostat then there is only one other thing that controls flow of water. Radiator could be stopped up but I dont think its possible to all of a sudden be plugged up so bad water cannt flow though it.

Okay...I took the radiator off and its fine....took the water pump off....its fine. Took the radiator cap up to the parts store, had it tested, it was bad. Bought a new one and it didn't over heat until today...took it on a 15 mile stretch up there and back...done fine until i got home. Then it over heated. Popped the hood and the water in the Engine Coolant container was boiling over. What do I do now?

Your radiator cap might be bad. It might not be holding any pressure. It's an easy change to see if it's the problem.

Wouldn't want any other!

is your radiator hose still collpasing?
have you changed the hose recently?
some hoses come with what looks like a spring to keep the hose from collapsing. one time i changed one and took out that spring looking thing and had the same problem.

If the Rad is not pluged with gooe and the themo
is good, sure its not in upside down, the spring
goes in the block.

One thing no one even thought of, Your Fan
posably the clutch is bad on your fan and not
drawing enough air to keep it cool.

You would not over heat like 40 mph and above
but as soon as you slow down you would.

Did you flush the Rad out when you had it out
just use a garden hose and blast it both
directions a few times

I guess we all look to hard and forget the simple
things that hardly never go wrong.

Hose sucked flat? Sounds like something is plugged, Possibly the water jackets in the heads?

If they put too much silicone on the Intake Gaskets it could have created a smaller opening combined with rust/gunk breaking loose and blocking the artery.

Which hose sucked flat? Top or Bottom?

Still thinking the Radiator Core is plugged. If you used radiator flush prior to this happening then you could have broken a bunch of gunk loose and as it was pushed thru the radiator it plugged the core.

Good Luck,
Shank

Hey i had a similar problem with my 95 dakota. It ended up being corrosion inside the radiator, had the radiator replaced and everthing started working perfect again.
The mechanic told me when he went to refill my old radiator it took about 30 mins because it was all clogged up.

One other possibility. If your belt is stretched it may be the problem. I went through all the trouble shooting once when my pontiac kept over heating. Last thing I checked was the drive belt and guess what new belt and problem was solved.

I had a simular problem with an 84 dodge pu. I replaced everything except the radiator. and it still overheated. The radiator seemed ok when I flushed it with water but when I finally had it flow checked it was partialy stopped up. A new radiator cured the problem but by that time the overheating had cracked the head.which is how I came to buy my 98 Dakota.

Hi.
2003 dakota sxt with about 38k km's on it.

I have a similar problem that is making me nervous.

Similar to the posting above where after a 15 mile drive it over heated once i got home.

There is quite a bit of steam comming form the rad cap.

I checked the rad coolent tank and topped it off just in case.

Now what to do? I need to get it to the repair shop. However it over heats in a couple minutes.

I'm afraid to add water and it does not seem to do anything.

It sounds like it's the thermostat is not opening.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

P.S.> is it me or is this a very dangerous idea of having a cooling system thermostat cut off the flow to the radiator?

Many places around here you can't even get a tow truck to tow you out.
