Subject: WTF?? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, this is what I've done to my 1997 3.9 4x4 so far (127,000 miles).
K&N fipk
19 lb blueprinted FMS injectors
double roller timing chain
mopar chain guide
new o2 sensors (both)
autolite plugs
mobil1 10-30 in the motor
mobil1 gear oil w/ mopar limited slip additive in both differentals
new water pump
black magic fan
cap, rotor & plug wires were changed last year w/ the mopar ones.
BUT I'm only geting 9.8 mpg around town according to the computer!! Shouldt I be getting alot better mileage than that?
I'm going a a longish trip this weekend (170 miles in all) so maybe it will pick up after I get back. But is there anything I'm missing or should look at here??

Message: Yes you are missing something.
Any time you replace a timming cain and if the
mopar chain guide you metioned is the tensioner
they sell it will knock your injector sync way
off.
You need to pull the cap and see if there is a
line on the pickup plate that say's cyl. If no
line it needs to be set with a scan tool that can
read it like the snap-on 2500 or dealer tell them
to set it at 0 they will but most dealers will
never go on the + side
If the line is there turn the crank clockwise only
and line up the TDC not the 6cyl mark but TDC be
sure the rotor is pointing at or near the #1 plug
wire. if oppisite go around 1 more time
Look straight down over the top of the rotor and
the button needs to be centered over the cyl line
push counter clockwise on the rotor to remove any
play.
The bolt on the dist you need to losten is 1/2
either a short box wrench, flex socket with an
extention or a reg dist wrench, there a pain to
get to.
I seen a lot of trucks with this set a -6 when you
get them near 0 to the + side they run a lot
better

Message: Thanks Larry, checked it last night and it was off a little bit, I had to turn it ccw to align the mark with the rotor. I assume it will take the computer a few miles to adjust itself. And your right that dist. bolt is a pain arse.
Also, while flipping through the Chilton book I noticed that it shows roller lifters for this motor ('97 3.9) are roller lifters stock on these motors?

Message: Yes the magnums came with roller lifters.
If you had to move counter clockwise than you were
on the minus side and yes it will take a while for
the computer to adjuxt to the new setting.
You can even go a little farther right now you
are probably real close to 0 but I would wait
and see how it runs after a few hundred miles.
It shoud run better
