Subject: Common V6 Mods IP: Logged
Message: I recently purchased a new (2003) SXT cc with an automatic trans. I was wondering: 1-what are some of the common (and cost-effective) modifications to the 3.9 to squeeze a little more power out of my truck? and 2-is there a reputable source for these parts?
Also, have there been any changes to the 3.9 in the past 2-3 years? I haven't seen any parts listings for the 2003 3.9 - I was hoping that the listings are just old and that the parts will still work for my truck.
Thanks.

Larry: Regarding the TB - are you saying replace it with a V8 TB or opening up the one I have? Also, what are your thoughts on a chip? Any suggestions on a particular brand for the cold air intake?
injectors: Regarding the 5.0 injectors - for any particular year, or are they basically the same? Is it worth getting used or should I be getting brand new ones?
Sorry for sounding like a moron. I'm new to this kind of performance. The last time I did any performance work was on a 396 BBC - no injectors, no computer, and no exhaust!

Message: go to this site and search for your year truck and ur all set.http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsDODGE.asp for a intake you should just make your own for the most part they work just as well and some times even better. i would buy the injectors new but thats my take on things the only thing i bought used for this truck was the v8 tb because all the performence ones are way over priced. check out this site too they have some helpfull tips on it http://www.speedtweaks.ca/tipsandtricks.php dont waste your $$ onthe headers untill you have done most if not all of the other bolt on mods. really look into those 1.7 rr they help a ton. chips for these trucks are also over priced your best bet is to look around for a group buy on eather the ase or the supertuner but thats just my 02 hope i helped some

Message: Sam @ socaldakotas.com is a good guy to deal with as well, for the TB and the 1.7 rockers. I read he might be interested in a group buy on the 1.7's. YOu can go junkyard hopping to look for a used V8 TB, or save the hassle and by one from Sam. The two changes where I saw the most differance to date were the CAI (cold air intake), I got mine from Intense performace, and the V8 TB. Do it in baby steps if you will. Make it inhale better, and exhale better. Inhale: CAI, V8TB or a pretty 48mm TB, Exhale: exhaust, either a cat back system, or even just a muffler for now thats what I did. I have a Superchips tuner on order now from a group buy at another site. I will post what the ole butt dyno tells me. Oh btw. Larry @ J&J knows his stuff, he gives alot of good advice. Good luck and have fun.

Message: See what size your factory TB is (plate size) you
can remove the torque step and air horn's on your
stock body but it depends on what size it is, the
torque steps on the top of the bore are 2mm
smaller than the throttle plates.
If its a small 42 44mm I would just go with a V8
or aftermarket TB, If you got lucky and got a 46
yes open it up, the hp dif between the F&B 48mm
and the fastman 46mm is not much.
As far as chip's there is not much availible for
03, a jet chip will help a little and they give
you better gas milage from the small timing
advance, little better respose. ASE is about the
only other option around $400 but these chips
add 15 to 17 RWHP on the dyno test's I seen on
2 V6'ers and I have one myself.
The injectors on your 03 are not #19 but #21 they
will not increase the performance that much but do
help with mid and top end and give you a smother
run through out the entire rpm range and a smother
idle.
Cold air, K&N, intence performance, they all make
fair set ups for the trucks.

Message: I just got my superchips tuner for my V-6, and it has given quite a decent performance boost. I have and F&B 48mm TB, JBA headers, Gibson Cat-Back, Volant CAI, and I removed the stock clutch fan. Next on my list is 1.7 rockers.
The tuner advances timing and plays with the fule curve, seems to work well. I got mine for $285 on a group buy. The box says it will work with '03 model year.

Message: I guess the cold air intake is my first "no brainer" change. I think that I'll work on the intake first cold air, bigger TB and 1.7 rockers.
As far as headers, I've noticed that most everyone goes with JBA rather than Gibson (which seems quite a bit cheaper). Is there a notable performance difference? quality difference?
As far as exhaust goes, I've been seeing some discussion about losing torque/low end power because of a loss of backpressure. Is this problem only when going with duels or should I be concerned about putting on a 3" single pipe too?
By the way, thank you to everyone who posted with suggestions - I'm starting to learn a lot.

Message: PBXR, my butt dyno is very happy. I switched up my tire size to a 1" taller tire, and I still have better power than before. Its not a punch you back in the seat difference, but it runs much smoother, and revs more quickly. The tuner definitely advances the timing, it pinged like crazy until I got some premium gas in the tank.
It especially seems noticeable from 2000-4000 RPM.
It didn't seem to do much for the shifts, but my truck already shifted fairly hard, so I'm not complaining. It will shift later at full throttle though. Plus it will raise your RPM limiter and speed limiter, and let you recalibrate the speedo, so its a win-win for me.

i wouldnt waste my money on brand new ones theyre like 400 bucks..thats a lot of $ for such a little gain in power..i bought mine for 50 bucks at glenn and jerrys junk yard in ft worth texas..just needed to clean them off..

Message: On the TB size, 96 same
The only way to tell is to mesure. just mesure
with a ruler and see what you come up with on
inches.
Just eyeball down the top and get the torqe step
size, your TB will be 2mm biger than the step.
40mm = 1.57" just over 1 1/2
42mm = 1.65 just over 1 5/8
44mm = 1.73 about 1 3/4
46mm = 1.81 about 1 7/8
As far as getting injectors you can get new ones
instead of old ones from a bone yard.
Bosch 0280150556 D5B-19lb* NEW 6/Set: $173.60
http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsDODGE.asp
And Bruce at Fiveo is a great guy to do business
with.
I would not put used injectors in any thing I work
on and getting them cleaned is just as expensive
as a new set.
92 to 96 mustang 5.0 have 19lb injectors that will
work but go to autozone and get a new O Ring set
if you do that. just ask for mustang set they are
the same but are not listed for the dodges
