 Subject: 3.9 -vs- 3.9 magnum

What did Dodge do to these motors that makes them different. My '88 4X4 has 143k on it and is tired. I was thinking of buying a remanu magnum. What would be the best year to get and will I need to get the newer computer too. Or should I rebuild my '88 motor and do some performance add-on's?

everything on the top end of the motor is different. I think all they share is the bottom end (if that). Magnum heads have a lot better flow with bigger valves, better ports, 1.6 rockers, roller camshaft.... and so on.

The premagnum is rated @ 125hp and the magnum (92' and up) puts out 175hp which is quite a difference in power.

Anybody know any reliability difference or gas pinging issues between the magnum and pre-magnum engines? I'm amazed at how little my '91 pre-mag pings on 87 octane (i.e. rarely ever pings on any brand I've ran)with 119,000 miles on it. Do you magnum guys have good luck with the 87 octane? My '00 4.0 Jeep six seems picky on the 87 octane, does best on Mobile. Side note, that 4.0 190 hp straight six kicks butt, I wonder if DC ever considered putting it in the Dakota, maybe too long? After all, they do put the 3.7 Liberty six in the Daks now.

the 3.9 premag has a roller cam as well. question will the mag head fit on a premag engine and will the premag intake bolt up it them?

pre mag intake will not bolt up to magnum heads. Magnum heads use a vertical bolt pattern while non-mags are angled. Also, magnums recieved SMPI.

If you want to put a Mag in your 88 you need to
change computer, wire harnas, I am not sure but
your dash is set up differant and you would need
to change that 2.
Big hassle just do some work on the pre mag it
would be a lot cheaper and less headaces
Find a 4bl manifold, cam with a 600 holley and
you will have plenty of power 240 240 nice power
over 2500 right to red line.
