 Subject: 97 sport and 02 sxt difference

I own a 97 dakota sport ext. cab with the 3.9 v6 and manual

My friend has an 02 SXT also with a 3.9 v6, and automatic.

His truck seems a lot faster than mine, and I want to know some possible reasons why? I'm not bad at the 5-speed at all, so i've ruled that out.
