Subject: flowmaster 40 or 50?
IP: Logged

Message:
what is the difference? my main concern is performance, specifically gas milage. that said i don't want it loud or ricey. i realize it won't sound like a v8, but the lower growl the better. any recommendations?

From what I know the 40 will be a little louder than the 50 will. The 50 won't give you as much interior noise.

i have a 50 on mine and it sounds a little louder than the exhaust and gives you that nice sounding growl with out the nasty after noise that the 40 gives you

Go with a Borla, they are a little more expensive but you'll notice the little increase in hp and it has a strong sound but not horribly loud!

I have a 50 series which is what Flowmaster recomends, sounds O.K. most of the time, but at high R.P.M.'s the thing will start to sound like a damn rice burner. Even then it does sound real good as long as you don't stomp the hell out of it. I suggest duel exausts or just dump them right after the muffler. Mine is a delta flow and I noticed a difference in horses. 50 is a little louder, but in overdrive you can barely hear it with the windows up.

Duals aren't a good idea with these, too much loss of power.

i vote for none..flowmaster sucks. if your looking for more then just noise then look at dynomax or hooker. you can prob build a better muffler in ur basement by using dixi cups and glue. hooker makes a aero chamber with a 2 1/2 inlet with duel 2 1/2 outs thats if you want the duel look you wont lose any power with it. its up to you...im just anti flowbasterd. 40 series 2 chamber is the loudest flowmaster other then the single chamber that have to offer. 50 is next to the 40 but much more of a deep tone

i would really like you to explain on how duels comin out of the muffler with the same diamiter outlets as inlets would make the truck not benifit. there is no increase in flow theres no decrease to gain or lose from duels out the muffler compared to a single. the performance may be hinderd a tiny bit if any (which you wouldent even notice) beucase the exhaust gases would be fighting each other while trying to get out. where the real problom lies is in the muffler when people are trying to buy flowmasters for performence. jeremy i would really like a explination on this

there isn't enough air coming in man. Not enough back pressure. you'll lose all kinds of low end torque.

not enought back pressure? how did you come up with this? first of all the exhaust is goin threw 3 cats second why would a muffler having duel outlets mean $hit other then for looks? if the muffler with duel outlets flow more then a single why dont drag cars run duel outlet mufflers? o thats right becuase there is no flow diffrence. heres another one if the duel outlets flowed more then why arent they any more expensive then the single outlets beucase of the more hp you would gain from it? if the pipe after the muffler would make a diff then why do people run turndowns at the end of there muffler with these dak? if what ur saying hold true they should be losing backpressure and there trucks would not pick up any performance. i do know you need back pressure to run the motor but a muffler with duel outlets hurting your perf becuase it has 2 holes in the end of the muffler thats just stupid...call up any respectable exhaust company dynomax/hooker/flow$hit/or summit or jegs they will all tell you the same.

Let's keep it simple here...

If you run TRUE dual exhaust, you lose a bit on the low-end due to lack of back-pressure. If you run single-in/dual-out (No bigger than 2 1/2" pipes I think), you won't lose much, if any.

What I meant was running true duel exausts, which is possible, it might take a little extra money and time, but I think it would be worth it. Also, if you purchase a cold air system or just a high flow filter this will get the engine "breathing" in faster and should give some marginal increase in back pressure (I do not think that this is a factor). Also, if you live in a state that does not have emissions laws (Arkansas for me) you could just run straits or get a glass pack and break the glass out, they are about the same. You might have to be careful when and if you put the muffler on, some areas in larger cities do have noise laws.

if your goin to run true duel i would not go any bigger then 2 1/4 if that. dynomax has a layout on there site on how big u should go if you want to run true duels. if you do run true duels make sure u get a x pipe on it

Okay I know this feed is 7 years old but listen please. As a piston is pushed up in the cylinder, it builds up pressure. This compresses the air/fuel mixture and then is ignited. the gasses left in the cylinder are then let out by the exhaust valve. the gasses leave the engine from there through your exhaust system. all stock mufflers do is "muffle" down the sound. they have nothing to do with the performance of the engine. after market mufflers are less restrictive while some pull the exhaust out faster. Straight piping a vehicle will NOT hurt the engine
