Subject: Start up oil psi. IP: Logged
Message: My 97 4x4 has developed a odd oil psi problem. When I first start it, the gauge reads 0psi for about2 or 3 seconds the goes up to 20lbs for 2 or 3 seconds the up to the higher side of the gauge (normal running oil psi). I just changed to oil less that 100 miles ago (Mobil1 10-30 and a Mobil1 filter).
What do you guys think? plugged filter? bad sender? Immanent motor death ? oil pump ?

Message: Yeah, mine does pretty much the same thing, sometimes the check gouages light says on a little longer cause of it, I don't think you have anything to worry about though I think I read here once that the tube for the sending unit is really small and gets plugged easily therefore giving you inaccurate readings. If your really concerned buy an after market one and test it but I'm pretty sure its fine.

Message: How many miles? Does it click & rattle until your Oil pressure climbs? How long have you owned it? Regular Maintenance or neglected? Dino or Synthetic Oil?

Message: Does it just do that with the mobil filter? Does the filter have an anti-drainback valve?

Message: Its got 127000, my Dad owned before me and he's kinda so-so on the maintainence. I've only had it for about two months.
Its got Mobil1 in it now, God only knows what was in it before.
But there's no rattles or clanks or other bad sounding noises, it starts and runs nice & smooth. Its just that inital start up oil psi that doesnt seen quit right.

Message: Try a differant oil filter like a Wix, I have seen
a lot of bad oil filters out there had a few
myself driving down the highway and watching the
presure go up and down.
They will plug and open and close the bypass and
in some filters its made out of cardboard.
Swithing to synthetic will clean all the old
deposites in the motor and plug the filter fast.
Change it more often at first like 1000 miles
next 2 than 3000 miles, Have seen this happen
on some trucks we changed over to Amsoil that had
high milage on them.
Another thing to do is use the 318 V8 filter its
bigger and will give you better flow than the
short V6 filter and the thread size is the same.
Just screw it on and look your presure will come
up faster and run 10 to 20 lbs higher on a lot
of these trucks.
