hey i emailed some1 about twinturbos for the 3.9 and heres what he had to say

Chris,

It would just cost you a lot more, and there would be no performance difference in going to a twin turbo setup on the 3.9L rather than a single turbo. Twin turbos really only start becoming a necessity when you are turbocharging larger engines(350+ cu. in.).

is this true? no xtra power from twin?

if that's true then why did the supra's come from the factory with twin turbos?....they only had like 3 liters....

oh,yeah...so did the 2000GT and dodge stealth and they produced 320 HP with only 3 liters!

You can get away with just a single turbo if it is big enough. Look at the buick grand national for example.

it's not only how big of a turbo but what your engine can do with it...if it's too big or too many than it will not work well...if you use a bigger turbo you will need to figure out a way to get the air through the heads faster... exhaust,cam,port,polish,valves,rockers..and so on

The engine design and powerband have a lot to do with the turbo design (single or twin). The size of the turbo, compressor, and engine design all have to be taken into consideration. In the end result, boost is boost...it just depends on how you want to get there. The single Hybrid that we're going to use makes the same amount of power across the board as a twin system.

IntenseDak39: They also used much smaller turbos.

what i think i was referring to was that on some of the cars that offer twin turbo (i think the supra) have different size compressors...they use the smaller turbo to spool up faster and then the bigger one kicks in...the idea was to prevent as much turbo lag as possible...the earlier crysler T4 had the VNT...the spool actually change size to prevent turbo lag...i think it was one of the most efficient turbos ever.

well just about every high power supra is converted to a single turbo. it's simply more efficient (and obviously alot cheaper) to drop the sequential system and go with a large single. then again the supra's are inline 3.0l's which makes the header design easier. on supras a T66 provides more than enough power for most applications, and if not, then there's a T88 awaiting you(like SW's 9.8sec monster).

on 3000GT's/Stealths going single for high power isn't quite as easy. it's a transversly mounted 3.0l V6. the engine bay is CRAMPED! no one that i know of has made the swap to a single because of the difficulty of designing an efficient header/downpipe system. so most people stick with twins, and most people stick with the same manifold/compressor housing sizes too. they keep the small T4 housing and run huge compressors like the dr650's that matt monet runs in his 10sec stealth.

so it's hard to say that one is better than the other, there's just too many variables that you have to take into consideration.

bernd said it well. there's alot you need to take into account when deciding here. honestly, unless you plan on getting really deep into modding your truck(ie: the twin turbo 3.9l that was running 11's or 10's or whatever that was) then you're better off just going with speedtweek's single setup when it comes out. it'll be alot cheeper and easier.

have you ever looked into those sport compact magazines? they all keep the twin turbo setup on the supras and push around 900hp! i don't think the single would do that!

intense, what magazines are you reading? trust me, the most common move on high hp supras is to go single. like i said, a T88 is plenty of turbo to push 900+ hp. if you want real numbers (unlike most found in magazines) run over to supraforums.com and see what all the big guns are running over there. SW is, as far as i know, the fastest on that board (9.8@151mph) and he's running a SINGLE T88. the only really high power supra i know of that's running twins is the JUN supra that runs twin T78's, but that thing doesn't make boost until about 50mph(it was made to be a top speed car).

there are plenty of turbos large enough to make 900+ hp out of a 3 litre engine. and actually fairly large single, lets say a T66, on a supra will make just as much boost and will even have less lag than a twin setup using two medium sized turbos (something like twin sp57's or sp60's).

check out sport compact car....the only single turbo that i have seen in that mag is one where the car used nitrous to get him out of the hole (prevent lag) and then the nitrous would shut of and the turbo kick in...
yes, i look at that mag because my girlfriend has a del sol...not fast but a blast to drive..

Listen, for drag racing and full blown power (enough for 10s to 7's) single turbo is the only way to go. Twin turbos are great for the street, but dont think that those 2 turbos are always working at the same time. You have sequential and non sequential turbos. What you should do though since we are talking about going fast is sell those stupid trucks that are a waste of time and buy a AWD DSM. Then you will understand power. 600-800 hp out of 2.0 litres is something else.

Listen, I responded because I am a moron who just does a search for the word turbo, because I just saw 2 Fast 2 Furious and now I am the expert on anything and everything that is fast and\or Furious. Back to my beliefs...single turbo is better, because it is easier to fit just one up my ass than two and I love those AWD DSMs, but I dont quite understand that real power is a Hemi V8 making 8000 HP running people to 4.4 second 1/4 mile blasts

Ok faggots. I could teach you a f***ing thing or two. You guys have no idea what you are talking about nor do you make any sense. I could school you on how to make power. I could go into egt ranges, detonation, timing, perfect a/f ratio, forced induction, knock, and anything else about how to make REAL power and tune a car. You ass holes are talking about is twin turbo better than single? And making references to sport compact car? what the hell is that... Build a car (or 3 like me), run faster than 10's, and learn to drive, then and only then, make jokes. And to the homo who pretended to be me, see me... You have my e-mail. I'll f**kin put any amount of cash anywhere on whatever gay ass sh*t you are pushing. Keep taking your cars to your local shop to get the work done for ya. I responded to this old ass post because i stumbled upon it and was blown away by how stupid everyone that was making comments. I can appreciate any form of motorsports from ls1 camaros, grand nationals, turbo dsm's, and 2x turbo supras... All of which I have owned and worked. So like I said see me.
