Subject: lots of questions pls help me IP: Logged
Message: ok i got a bunch of questions for anyone so pls feel free to tell me anything. Ok i bought a 95 dakota 3.9L V6 with 69000 miles on it. It now has 74000 and i love this truck. The motor is very clean, the trans was just flushed and its in great condition, new plugs and wires, and i just had my oil changed. Its my first truck and its 4x4. ok so now with the questions:
1. My truck every now and then will lose power and the whole engine shakes, sorta like it wants to stall. It normally happens when i am under a quarter tank of gas. I think its either my fuel pump or my fuel filter, but i m leaning towards the pump i think that for some reason when i get low on gas its having trouble pumping the gas through. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
2. I m looking into beefing up my enging with a custom dual intake (300 cfm), a throttle body spacer, a "piggy back" computer chip, and flowmasters with 3 inch piping. my question is will that be pretty good for 4 wheeling? what else can i do? i live in CA so smog is a biggie.
3. Anyone know of a good cheap lift kit or an easy way to put 33 s or 35 s on my truck?
4. does anyone have any old performance parts they are looking to sell?
those are my questions for now, i really need help and it would be great if someone could help me out. Thanks guys!

Message: Well, here's what I think....
I have had two Dakotas a 94 and now a 2000. I work for the U.S. Forest Service and I drive a 96 dakota when I do field work, all are v-6's. The 96 is having the same problems, it runs real ruff when it is low on gas and especaily when it is on an incline. I never let it get below 1/4 of a tank. I think you are on the right track with the fuel pump, but I have also noted that the placement of the pick-up may also be to blame. The 94 had some problems with running rough since I owned it, and needless to say that when I sold it it had the same problem.
Performace upgrade wise I think that the throttle body spacer is a waste of money, it might give you a little improvement, but nothing like what you will see from the Flowmaster and a good cold air system.
If you are thinking about a Jet chip, which seems to be the only one I can recal fitting the V-6 you might want to be carefull, I ahve heard mixed reviews, and I think you have to use 93 octane or above with them.
You also might want to consider a 180 degree thermostat, I have heard this will boost performance of the V-6 in conjunction with the Jet chip. Also consider which Jet chip to use, I think there and stage 1, 2, and 3.

Message: i'm sorry i can't help with the stalling thing, but as far as upgrades...the spacer is a peice of junk. a v8 throttle body is generally the best bang for the buck. I've also heard mixed things about the chip. 3" pipe's are going to be too big. Any more then 2 1/2"'s and you'll lose a ton of the low end torque which is what you'll want for 4 wheeling. I think your truck has 2 1/2"'s stock, so just go with a good muffler. The money you save doing that you can buy the new TB. There are a lot more things you can do, just depends are how far your willing to go. Look at some of the old posts on here. There's a cornicopia of knowledge.

Message: thanks alot for the info guys. Let me make sure i understand this, u guys are all saying that it would be better for me to go buy a new throttle body rather than getting a spacer, would u guys recommend me getting a tb off of a v8 or should i go with like an edelbrock tb? how big can i go? isn t there a risk if i go too big i will flood the engine ?? thank u very much for ur help.

Message: yeah one off a a v8 will work, but you can buy a perfomance one for 300-400 bucks. If you don't plan on going all out then don't go bigger then about 50mm.

Message: Yep, sounds like a winner with the throttle body, but be careful. I f I remember right you might need to also upgrade to the V-8 linkage and wire or retrofit a new wire, if I remember there might be some issues with the fit of the wire (rubbing on other parts). Ohter than that what Jeremy said was right on about the muffler and exaust piping. Do yourself a favor and make them duel exausts, it will sound better in my opinion. The Edelbrock would be the best in my opinion, but a stock Holley off any V-8 Dakota will work if you want to save money. Good Luck!

Message: I highly suggest you don't go over tire size 235/75/15. Waaaay too much stress on your tranny. Dodge didn't put a sturdy enuff transmission in these trucks and your 3.9 will have a hard time pushing them. Your gas Mileage is going to go from 15-17 down to 8-10. From what I hear fuel is outrageous in CA.
Good Luck,
Shank

Message: if you decide to run duals, make sure it's a single in and dual out. With true duals you'll have the same problem as with 3" pipe.
