Subject: Freeze Plug Please Help! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota and guess what? A repair manual is not available for my truck. :(
Well, water is streaming out from what looks to be around the engine and I have been told that they think the freeze plug popped out and is now around the fly wheel?!?
Can someone pleeeeeeeeeease help me by at least trying to give me some helpful instructions on how to get to the freeze plug. I've been told that the 2001 engine is different from the years before that and not to bother with buying the 2000 repair manual.
Any tips I might need as well please throw them my way.
Girl in need...Thanks so much!!!!

Message: 'they' would be the guys at the body shop that i was near when the water started streaming out. I ended up having them tow it to my uncles garage.
im not paying what the dealer will charge me to fix it, in this small town it would be a large fortune considering how they mark everything up here. so im trying to gather as much info as i can from other people so that me, my father, and uncle can fix it without being charged 50 bucks an hour for labor.

Message: Your warranty is up already? I would argue that one with DC anyway. If your close to the warranty mileage and the truck hasn't been abused.

Message: well lets just say that if you dont know how to work on a truck then dont try to change the freeze plugs yourself. lucky for me i had my dad and uncle. but if you do end up wanting to do the work yourself...RENT a tranny lift. You will blow more money on stupid stuff that you screwed up, like we did, if you don't just go get it in the first place.
All in all...you have to drain the oil...and take the filter out. Remove the drive shaft, take the main braket out...unhook all the sensors....then you get to remove the tranny. Just to get to a 59 cent part.
After all that....and trying to do it without a lift...we found out that we got the lift to late because once we put it all back together we had pinched the crank shaft sensor wires which wouldnt allow the truck to start.
Honestly....go pay a pro to do it.

I just use a floor jack with a 1x4 across the pan
unless there are 2 strong guys handy I am to old
to be lifting transmissions anymore
Yes don't that suck I have seen people junk cars
because of the rear frezze plugs going out just
to much labor involved for as you say a part that
costs less than a dollar

Message: how many freeze plugs does the engine have? because I only know of the one on my 1995 Dakota and it is the one on the passenger side and its under the motor mount? and my next question is can I change it with the motor still in the truck? and what do I have to take off to change it?
