Subject: Header install questions

Message:
Please help calm my fears. I recently purchased JBA Cat4ward silver ceramics headers. I'm itchin' to install them but I have some concerns.
1. Spark plug heat shields - lose them
2. Y pipe alignment. Instructions said if the Y pipe is deformed from heating & cooling. Put the easier one on first and then forced the other side. Wouldn't the RTV cure before I get to connect the headers to the Y pipe because I have to apply the RTV to the Y pipe before I mount the headers. Would my Y pipe have deformed with only 7K-8K miles on it?
3. Loss in low end torque?
4. Amount of difficulty? (if any?)

Any helpful inputs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

rtv? don't use rtv!! mine went on with no problem with 25,000 miles...leave the spark plug heat sheilds in...i tried to remove mine and couldn't. just some advise...i had trouble connecting the passenger side header to the y-pipe because i couldn't hold the bolt to tighten the nut...hard to reach with ac and fender well...i just went to the local autoparts store and bought a exhaust nut and bolt set that had a steel lip on the bolt that would hit something and keep it from moving (like on your rear shocks)...you may not have any trouble because your truck isn't as old...but hope it helps!

I left the heat shields off, they look crappy, the engine bay is much cleaner looking without.I don't think you will lose low-end torque, you have an upgraded TB to balance things out.

I agree with Lesley, lose the heat shields. Just give them a twist at the seam with some pliers and they will come out. You might need a little muscle on the y-pipe, but it wasn't bad on my truck at 30,000 miles. Just take your time, and you might want to find a helper. Four hands makes the install much easier. The RTV takes more than a couple minutes to cure, so don't worry about it. BTW, I used the copper exhaust stuff, not the blue or red RTV (this stuff will burn off). The RTV is just to lube the connection between the header cone and the y-pipe so it will pull together correctly.

You will be very happy with the headers combined with your other mods, I have about the same stuff on my truck. I never noticed any drop in low end.

Thanks for everyone's inputs. I think I am going to tackle the headers myself on Sat. I heard it was going to be in the low 50's. I've seen the spark plug heat shield on & off. Either way, I think they O.K. I could do that (decide) last after the header installation. Not alot of room on the driver's side with all the wires & tubes in the way. Thanks again.
