Subject: Clicking in valve train, please help!

I have a clicking noise coming from the number 6 cylinder. It always does it pretty bad on start up, then quietens after it comes to temperature. It keeps up with the engine rpm, clicking faster at higher rpm. Ive taken off the valve covers and didnt see anything noticably wrong, but i didnt remove and other parts under the cover. Could this be a roller rocker or a valve going bad? It doesnt sound like its coming from inside the block, it sounds like it is right under the valve cover. Any ideas here? This one really has me confused!

Does your truck have RR's? , stock are stamped steel non-ajustable not roller

the fuel injectors bad about noise on these trucks too.

Ok, they are the stamped ones, but they are rockers none the less. It might be the fuel injector, but it doesnt sound like its coming from there, it sounds like its directly under the valve cover. Anyone else?

My guess is it's a lifter... My friend's dad works for a dealership and he said that alot of the Mopar owned vehicles have a problem with getting dirt in the lifters and causing them to make a real bad clicking sound.

Hey, I have n '85 w150/318. I had the exact same type of confusion untill I pulled off the headers and replaced the gaskets. That solved ALL of my tick problems. Oh, and GB2000, before I did it, my symptoms were just like described here by cayalume. Well, it worked for me~~~

An exh leak can cause a ticking sound.

The lifters on these trucks do sometimes colasp
and make noise, usualy from dirty oil or a bad
filter like a fram leaking down. The backflow
and relief valve in the frams are made out of
card board, I have been using the carquest filters
made by Wix after 3 times starting cold and having
a colasped lifter, since I have changed it has
never done it again.

You can try a can of CD2 or restore a lot of times
it will fill in the micro scratces and quite them
down. I am not one who beleaves in additives but
I have used the restore on about a dozen trucks
with over a 100,000 miles with noisy lifters and
it actually worked.

Thanks for everyones help, Im gonna look into the headers having a leak, and im gonna add some engine restorer. Its not coming from the area around the headers, but who knows. Ive got right at 73k miles, and its not done it this bad until recently. Im gonna switch to some really good high quality oil, and see it that helps out too. Any other ideas, please post them! Thanks again!

I had a similiar problem on my 91. I changed all the rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and the pushrods. Solved the problem and even gained some HP back.

I agree - lifters. I have lifter noise on the passenger side, really annoying. It's too much work to replace them (even though I have 16 low mileage spares from my project engine rebuild). I'm going to put up with it until I get my engine swapped.
