Subject: Oil Leak From Hell IP: Logged
Message: Howdy
I have a question for you guys, after stuffing a
3.9L in a 92 2WD the thing practically pumps
the oil out on to the ground. It look like it is
coming out from in between the oil pan and
the block just below the oil filter. My first
thought was great the pan got bent, after
pulling the pan off and checking the contour of
the mating surfaces I put it back with a new
gasket. Same problem. I know it’s not coming
out of the oil filter or adaptor. There's got to be
some way to fix this thing. Any Ideas?

Message: take your Oil filter off and check to see if the previous filter gasket is stuck to the mating surface.
Been there, done that! I thought the filter threads were bad and not screwing all the way in, come to find out the old filter gasket was stuck to the block and you can't sack 2 gaskets on top o each other.
Good Luck!

Message: Or your rear main seal is bad,
Shank about the doubble oil filter gaskit,
My brother Bob changed the oil on his wifes Jeep
one day and she drove to work and blew it up.
Now every time he needs the filter changed he
stops over and gets me or one of the guys to do it
he won't even touch them anymore. LOL
Yes always check that the old rubber filter ring
is not stuck on the motor,if you cant see it take
your fingers and feel to be sure its not there
and look on the old filter to be sure its on it
and not stuck to the motor.
In my lifetime as a mechanic I have seen 4 people
do this and the cost of a motor replacement or
overhal is expensive CHECK IT
Oh by the way we put a used motor from the bone
yard in her Jeep. free of course for brother Bob
the knukle head

Message: I’m thinking it is the oil filter adaptor plate.
Because the top of the oil filter stays dry and it
look as the oil is shouting out from the oil pan
and the engine, but there isn’t that kind of
pressure in the pan. Adjacent to where a
believe the oil is shouting out from is that
adaptor plate. I’m going to drive over to the
shop tonight and see if I can “The Right Stuff”
it. Thanks for the responses I’ll let you know
what happens.

Message: Larry, I was lucky and was in the shop when it happened to me. One of the other mechanics started yelling when Oil started pouring out my engine. Lost 1 qt in about 10 seconds.
Check the tightness of the Oil Cooler (If you have 1). My Bro-In-Laws Ram has an Oil cooler and every time we take off the filter the center shaft/nut for the cooler tries to come off with the filter.
Hope this is your problem, Simple fix.

Message: The oil filter adaptor plate that came off the
original 3.9L was warped, witch meant
torquing it to specs also allowed the oil to
shoot out the side. So I used “The Right Stuff”
and my Chevy torque wrench (As Tight As You
Can Get It W/Out Braking). No more leak and
that full 3” FlowMaster still sounds great.
