Subject: motor oil in trans IP: Logged
Message: i was at the track with my friend last week and he had a problem with his trans. when he went to fill it back up with fluid(someone else was doing the pouring) they put a quart of motor oil in it. then filled the rest with trans fluid. we flipped out. this guy said he always does it to his trans and gets no wear in it. anyone ever heard of this or is this guy just an idiot(we drained the oil out of it by the way

Message: (assuming automatic transmission) I have never heard of it, and would never recommend it. Transmission fluid requirements of most transmissions are too specific to try some crap like that.

Message: I would keep that guy out of your pits or keep a close eye on him. Anyone who is not one of my regular crew members get told right off the bat that any decisions or work to be done on the racecar goes through my crew chief first. And it get done how HE wants it done. That way he knows everything that is done to the car and he can supervise to make sure its done right. All of the crew does this. And if his decision is not right we all say "I TOLD YOU SO" and have a good laugh (racing is suppose to be fun, remember).
I had a new guy tell me he could check valve lash so I let him do it. Well on my second qualifying lap most of the adjusters he left loose let the lifters come off (SOHC motor) and KFB!!! broke the cam, bent titanium valves, junked the head. Expensive mistake but we should have double checked.
Now to get back to you original question, I dont know what motor oil would do to a trans, I've always run manuel trannys.
