Subject: Line on cat? IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking of gutting out my cat, I just had a 1 in 2 out dynomax muffler put on and I would like to take the cat off and gut it soon while the pipe is not rusted together. I have an 89 V6 3.9 and there is a pipe that goes into the side of the cat and up into the motor somewhere. What is this for? If I decide to forget gutting it out and put a pipe in place of it, how to I get rid of the pipe attached to the cat, and again what is it for? Plus how can I get the cat off with the pipe attached? Thanks for the help.

Message: also anyone know if a check engine light would come on if the cat is gone on an 89? did they have 02's back then? also dont I dont think the pipe is the 02 cause goes into the middle of the cat, not the front or back

Message: Pre-1996 vehicles only have a front O2, so your check engine light won't come on if you gut the cat. That line going in to the cat probably goes up to an air injection pump. That needs to be attached for your truck to pass inspection in most states.

Message: I noticed on my 97 that it has o2 sensors in front of and behind the cat, Im just going to replace the cat with a high flow one insted of gutting or eliminating it al together. I assume that if both sensors read the same it would not be a good thing.

Message: That is correct, that line that comes from your cat goes to your smog pump. You do need this to pass inspection. You don't have to hook that up when changing cats unless you HAVE to pass inspection. IF you don't remove ALL the lines the lil pipe will rattle against the fram. If decided to remove all the pipe you will have to take the pipe off at the exhaust manafolds as well. After this you will have to make a cover for the wholes.
Taking the cat off is sort of stupid. The 3.9 is real bad about sucking air through the exhaust after a high fev. The cat heats up the back pull. w/o the cat the air will be A LOT cooler than the valves and cause them to warp. Another problem is that some engines do require a lil back pressure to run well, the 3.9 is one of them. Your gonna have more power leaving it on.
If you need instruction removing the smog pump and the lines that run from the cat to the back of the exhaust manafold and to the pump let me know and I will help you.
The front of where the cat connects to the Y pipe is about 4 inch after the bottom of where the pipes come together.

Message: Ok, so how about instead of removing the cat, I take it off and gut it and put it back on, will that create problems like warped valves? Bad exaust smell, I live in michigan, I dont know how tough they are on emmissions control

Message: If you gut it you just as well not have one on there... and that would be bad. Just buy a new one, if you feel they are over priced find a wrecked dakota to get it off of.... I am sure some moron kid has wrecked a dakota with a good cat.
