I have been reading this board for a while and I am impressed with the knowledge of the posters here. I have a couple of questions and hope some of you guys can help me. I have a 1990 4wd 3.9ltr. which is getting a little tired (232,000 miles) It has been a great truck and the body is still excellent. I am looking at replacing the engine and transmission. My truck does have fuel injection but it is tbi not mpi. What year did the 3.9's start having multiport injection? 1992? I would like to find a 1992 or newer engine because I know they have quite a power increase over my 1990 engine. What would be involved to do this switch to a newer style engine and would my transmission be ok. I know my transmision is an A500. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

According to my local dealer, even a 2000 3.9L V6 would fit under your hood. However, you will end up changing the wiring, and the computer, too, I think. Its possible, just plan on giving it a lot of time!

The tranny might be able to stay put.

You can run the newer motors in these trucks but
a wire harnass change has to be done

92 to 95 would be the easiest

96 97 are OBD 2 and in 98 vin code flash required

Yes paln on a lot more time we just did an 85 jeep
changed over to the HO stright 6 with multiport
injection and it requred a complete wire harnass
and dash board pod change (was carb'd)

The new dash's upto 96 will also fit in the older
trucks, one with a tach is what you want.

If you have a A500 trans will bolt up but is it
over drive set up or you should change it out
unless it has the plug for the O/D and lockup
on the side by the shifting linkage

also be sure you have provisions for the crank
sensor on the bell nothing in the way

Otherwise Yes everything will bolt right in

When we do an upgrade like that we usualy change
the engine and trans, newer running gear.

some times you will also have to change the trans
and case mounts just grab the whole frame member
from the truck it comes out of

Take you batery and have it load tested. Those symptoms are the first signs of a battery on it's way out.
