Message: torque is twist. When you cannot break a bolt loose, you gotta "torque on it", that is apply more torque to get it off. Hp and torque work together, since they are one in the same. Generally speaking though, torque is low end power and hp is speed.

Message: torque gets the vehicle going, HP keeps it going, HP is a calculation of torque at a specific rpm, there is a formula, but i dont know it, because HP cannot be measured, it is calculated, torque is measured

Message: Just as Joe says, torque is twisting force. Horsepower is one of the units you can use to measure power. Power is doing a certain amount of work in a certain amount of time, but as far as engineers are concerned, there isn't any work unless something moves. The more the wheels spins, and the harder the engine twists (torque), the more power there is.
If you think of an electric car that can apply torque even if the car can't move, there is torque but the horsepower is 0 because nothing is moving.
The site http://howstuffworks.lycoszone.com/question622.htm gives the exact formula:
(Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower
I can't find what RPM goes with the maximum torque for the 3.9 L engine, but the service manual says the 4.7 L engine makes 295 LB-FT of torque at 3200 RPM. If we use the formula, we find the 4.9 L engine is making 180 HP when it is making the greatest torque. This is less than the maximum 235 HP, which occurs at 4800 RPM.

Message: horsepower = how fast your gonna go
torque = how much time its gonna take to get that fast
175 hp. at 100 lb.ft might take a certain vehicle to say a top speed of 125 mph in 3 minutes
same vehicle with 225 lb.ft. might take only 30 second to get to 125 mph but it will still only go 125 top speed.
100 hp at 225 lb.lbs might only hit 80 but will do it in 18 seconds
175 hp at 225 ft.lb. will still do 80 in 18 but will continue all the way up to 125 mph.
don't know an easier way to say it.

torque gets them down the road
