Subject: de-activate Air Bag question IP: Logged
Message: How do I de-activate the drivers side air bag?
I'm pretty short and sit pretty close to the steering wheel. I had one go off and I was blind for a month because my eyes and face were so swelled up and don't want that to happen again.

Message: I dont think that you can disable them yourself, try going to the dealer and explaining your situation, they can dis-arm them after you sign a few waiver forms.

Message: In most states, a permit is required to disable a functioning safety system. Check with the Dept. Of Safety in your state.

Message: I live in Canada and there is a 6 month long paper trail to do this. I would like to just do it myself.
I don't know why they make it a law to have these things. They are dangerous! It should be our choice to have them not the goverments.

Message: This is just CYA stuff, but if you disable it make sure that you can re-enable it easily. Many states have stiff fines and more for selling a vehicle that has airbags (or other safety equip) disabled, especially if the buyer doesn't realize it. In some places if you sell a car with a disabled or tampered airbag you can be liable if the buyer of the car down the road gets injured in an accident.

Message: There is no info in the owner's manual about disabling the driver's side air bag. There is a reason for this also. That would make it too easy for someone to tamper with your vehicle and make it less safe for you to operate. I do not want it to be that easy for someone to screw with my airbags.

Message: I know there is something in the manual about a capacitor or something that you are supposed to de-energize when working the the dash.
It's so you dont accidently set-off the air bag. I'll see if i can find my manual and find out what it was.
