Subject: Changing by rear diff. fluid IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 V6 3.9L 2WD Dak sport with about 15,500 miles on it. I believe I read somewhere that you should change the rear axle fluid at around 12K miles. Is this true? If so, I'd like to give it a shot changing it myself if possible. Any suggestions on how to do it? What type of fluid to use? Do I have a 8.25 or 9.25? What's the best way to drain the fluid? What do I need to do it? I don't have access to a lift or anything. Can it be done on the ground?
Thanks for the help!!!!

Message: You most likly have a 8.25 and it is not nessasary
to change the fluid that often unless you want to.
I go 60,000 on the rears it takes just under 2 Qts

New DakMan,
I agree with Larry of J & J.
Premature for you to think of changing fluids.
--------------------------------------------------
For those of you thinking of changing your fluids ...
Helpful Differential Recommendations:
-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)
AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives. If you choose a different manufacturer than Amsoil ... fine by me, just offering my services.
-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.
Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.
-------------------------------------------------
Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 is excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials.

to give a little less drag and is very noticable
on the 4X4s giving them a little better milage

Message:
Amsoil is primarily an on-line or catalog supply company.
Some Retail Stores or Auto Shops carry Amsoil on the shelf.
Try GI Joes or NAPA, or try looking in your local Yellow Pages.
