Message: anyone have problems with their ball joints? i've had a noise in my front end now for 3-4 months and its getting worse. i've greased everything that you can including the sway bar bushings. i looked at the ball joints and there does not look like there is one bit of grease in them and you can't do anything cause they are sealed. the noise only comes when i'm going down hill with the brakes on. its a crunching noise and its bad!! has there been a bushing problem with these trucks ever, or ball joints?

Message: yeah, you got that right!! why the hell would you put greaseless anything on the front end of a vehicle? just another way for the factory to make money i guess cause i'll bet they wouldn't last past 20,000 miles if that.

Message: Alignment shops love to sell ball joints, they are a profitable part. They will usually tell you they are shot if they can see any play in them, even though some play is allowable (and necessary) especially on the lower ones. It is not typical that they are worn out at only 32k unless you are driving on some very rough roads, or off-roading. However, the ball joints on this year are not a strong point, either.

Message: bought my truck brand new and it was around the same mileage that i went for an alignment and was told the same thing. Dealer replaced either upper or lower ball joints, not both though. Dodge ball joints are notorious for having a problem in that range of year.

Message: I would not buy any pickup truck that does not have grease fittings in the stearing and ball joint components of the front end. Greasless parts will normally last longer than the warranty period but my experience is that these front end parts almost always require replacement in a rather short period of time there after. Mechanics advise replacement with parts that have grease fittings.
In my view do not buy a pickup truck with such high built in maintenance costs. I believe GM has grease fittings in the front end components of some of their pickups. Ask for this feature in writing before signing a sales contract and always check that the fittings are present before you take delivery of the vehicle. You might be wise to ask to have the truck on a hoist so that you can inspect each part to confirm the fittings are present.
