Subject: torque converter lock up IP: Logged
Message: I was wanting to know if it is possible (or how ignorant it is ), to bypass the torque coverter lock up on my 2002 3.9 auto 4x4 to get a few more rpms and pedal response at cruising speeds.

Message: if your overdrive is off, then the convertor will lock up in third gear...it won't lock up in third gear if the overdrive is on. maybe you can find a non-lockup convertor? they make them for the A500 trans and i was told by some convertor company that the A500 will fit 42R...but I think that the computer helps work the lockup, that might screw with that.

Message: But it seems that when the converter locks up there's only about 200 or 300 rpm difference. If you shut off overdrive there's a BIG DIFFERENCE, in rpms. The engine runs too fast at say 65 or 70 mph, with the overdrive off. If the converter didn't lock up in overdrive it seems the engine speed and response would be better matched. It sure couldn't make the mpg much worse than it is.And the better response time might offset the loss in mpg due to holding the pedal half way to the floor and downshifting ,just to go from 55 to 60 ,or holding speed on a slight grade with cruise control on.

Message: With the convertor locked up the trans temp will rise. Might cause trans dammage.

Message: Expensive solution since you have a 4X4....Gears. Or, you could change your wheel/tire profile.

Message: You COULD wire a switch to the lockup solenoid and turn it off. But if you're lacking that much power that you have to stomp it and downshift, maybe you need a V-8 or have other performance issues.
It will hurt gas mileage, probably about 1 mpg.
