Subject: 1987 3.9L stalling IP: Logged
Message: I'm having problems with my 87' 3.9L 4x4 stalling out. It seems to do it when im slowing down or traveling over 55mph. After it stalls it wont start up for around 5 minutes. I've had the truck for about a year now and its been doing this for about 8 months. The engine, carb, distributor, plugs and wires, and coil are all new. I'm at a loss so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Message: My truck 87 3.9 was doing the same thing for about a year. I just changed the Hall effect plate in the distrubter and it seems to have fixed the problem, but time will tell.

Message: Next time it stalls you need to quickly pull the
the coil wire out of the dist cap hold it
about an inch away from a good ground and have
someone turn it over and check for spark.
It almost sounds to me like a fuel pump but if you
are carborated it should have the old type pump
that bolts on the motor.
On the older trucks there were only 2 basic
components for the ignition, the control box
and the pickup in the dist, another thing that
used to happen is on the fire wall you will see
a ballast resistor with 4 wires on it what would
happen is the porclin would fall out of the back
and they would short to the fire wall and lose
spark.
87 88 is the year they went to throttle body
injection and elec fuel pumps.

Message: I have a 91 Dodge Dakota that stalls when I use the brake, Its because I have a vacumn plug. So if you can't figure it out check some of your vacumn lines. My truck would stall at intersections and wouldn't start, but it was just a vacumn line running from the TB.

Message: As can be seen at the bottom reply, I fixed this same problem by changing the Hall Effect plate in the distributer, but since you changed the distributer in yours, I don't know what else to tell you. Like you, I also changed a lot of other parts before I found the one that was causing the problem. I was about to put a bullet in the truck. Good luck. Brent

Message: My dakota has had a stalling issue, and plenty of other flooding and ignition issues, changed entire ignition, changed carb, nothing fixed it.
finally took the dash apart to fix speedometer and found my module, it had a small black door on the side so i instinctively pulled it off, and to my wonders theres a 9v battery for the memory on the module, replaced it and it fixed all of my problems, starts first turnover, no problems since.
