Subject: 95 v6 with rattle... IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
We are looking at a 1995 Dakota V6 SLT with only 61,500 miles. One owner, owned by a little old man. It is a really nice little truck and we are strongly considering buying it.
The only reason we are leary of purchasing it is because there is a rattle under the hood. We can not locate the source. It sounds like it is not inside the motor. Hubby took the belt completely off the truck, and when we started it back up (for only a few seconds), it still rattled. It does not rattle first thing in the morning, only after it has warmed up. When you rev the engine, there is a little black smoke. Does anyone here have any idea of where we need to start looking?
Thanks
Tricia and Chris

Message: Most V6 rattles are from the timing chain.
Aviable from dealer is a tensioner to be installed with a new chain and gears. This tensioner goes in place of camshaft thrust plate
