Subject: 1990 3.9 4wd engines and trans IP: Logged
Message: I have been reading this board for a while and I am impressed with the knowledge of the posters here. I have a couple of questions and hope some of you guys can help me. I have a 1990 4wd 3.9ltr. which is getting a little tired (232,000 miles) It has been a great truck and the body is still excellent. I am looking at replacing the engine and transmission. My truck does have fuel injection but it is tbi not mpi. What year did the 3.9's start having multiport injection? 1992? I would like to find a 1992 or newer engine because I know they have quite a power increase over my 1990 engine. What would be involved to do this switch to a newer style engine and would my transmission be ok. I know my transmision is an A500. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Message: your trans will work fine,not to the motor
the 92s up are mpi and yes these will bolt up just fine,
the problem comes in the heads and intake,the mag intake bolts straight down threw into the heads,your 90 premag intake bolts go into the heads at a angle
now to bolt your premag intake on a mag head you,ll need to have the mag heads drilled and tapped for your intake[hughes engines was doing this for $60]put if you check around some other
machine shops may do this
the mag motors use a serpatine belt for alt.,water pump etc.,you can use the 90 items if you want to stay with a multi belt system

I have been waiting 4 years for a response. Look at the original post date. I do have a 1993 engine sitting on an engine stand from a wrecked dakota that was given to me. It has 134,00 miles on it. I am going to disassemble it and send everything to the machine shop for cleanup and tolerance checks. Hopefully bearings and rings will be all that is needed. Would a slight overbore say .020" make a noticeable difference in power? I know this would require new pistons. I have allready heard about drilling the mag heads to match the non-mag intake. The machine shop said no problem and cost would be between $75- $100. I also have a throttle body with injectors from a 1991 dodge ram 318. The injectors are a little larger than what is stock for a 3.9. I tried them in my Dakota and they worked ok,however I saw no performance gain. The engine also would idle a little rough in cold weather at start up. This is probably due to the computer being in open loop mode and the mixture was too rich. After warming up the engine ran fine. I am thinking that with this magnum engine and better flowing heads these larger injectors may help my power. Any thoughts?
Just to let you know that since my last post 4 years ago the truck now has over 330,000 miles. Original engine and still runs good. I do have a noise which I think is piston slap. It is pretty loud when it is cold but as the engine warms up it becomes more quite. I have replaced the roller lifters, push rods and timing chain. None of this has made a difference. I also pulled the oil pan to change the gasket which was leaking. At that time I removed and checked the rod and main bearings. I miked the crank journals and all is well. The bearings looked good but I replaced them anyway along with a new oil pump. Oil pressure has allways been good even with the old pump and bearings. The noise seems to be valve train related but maybe it is piston slap with this many miles. Oil consumption is less than 1/2 quart between 3000 mile change. Thanks for any and all responses.

Message: Sounds good. A switchover to a Magnum engine would be a bolt in affair. You will need: wiring diagrams for your truck and for a magnum truck, so adequate splicing can take place. You will need a magnum computer also. You probably will need a different fuel pump also, because the TBI trucks run at significantly less fuel pressure than MPI units. I think TBI runs from 6 - 22 psi, and MPI runs 15 - 60 psi of fuel pressure. Also make sure your fuel lines are up to par for handling the increased pressure. Just a few tips for getting you started on your road to horsepower.

Message: I just bought a 1993 Dodge Dakota 2wd extended cab pick upwith a 5.2 and an A518 transmission. The transmission is bad so I got the truck cheap enough but I'm having trouble finding an affordable used tranny because I don't know what years and models will interchange. Could someone please give me a list of years and models to narrow my search ? I did find a 1992 model tranny but have not checked it out yet. What should I look for to make sure it's the right one ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bobby

Message: have you tried www.car-part.com? it uses a database of salvage yards across the country. i bet you'll find one there for a reasonable price. sorry i can't tell you exactly what years will interchange.
