Subject: 1992 Magnum 3.9 Sputtering IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1992 Dakota with the Magnum 3.9 that began sputtering on cold mornings this past winter. After driving a few miles, it would level off and run fine. Now this problem occurs intermittently, hot or cold. I have replaced the plugs, wires, fuel and air filters with no positive results. Recently, I replaced the Hall Sensor in the distributor twice and the truck will not idle properly with the new ones; had to put the Mopar part back in. The Dakota has almost 150,000 on the odometer.
Any tips on cleaning the throttle body or any ideas what may be causing this problem? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Message: You may have a pluged Cat
They fall apart with age and will restrict your
flow to the point where it will not rev up.
Or when is the last time you replaced the O2
they recomend 60,000
check your cap and rotor for carbon tracks they
look like a piece of hair stuck to the cap but
will send the spark to ground and create a miss.

Message: Thanks for the quick reply J and J.
A little more history on the Dakota: have never replaced the O2 (no codes set), cap and rotor have been replaced (same problem). Would a clogged CAT cause an intermittent problem?

Message: Check the intermediate shaft and bushing for wear.Sounds like you are on the edge of the 5 degree timing window with the distr.(cam sensor)

Message: I also have a 92 w/138k and every morning when it is cranked, power is non-existant for a few minutes and it progressively gets stronger and smoother. Ive done the plugs wires, cap, rotor, all filters are clean and I recently put in a V8 TB and wiped off the IAC (the one behind teh TB) pretty good and I still have no power in the morning but it is somewhat smoother. I have no cat on my truck and I think no O2 sensors either. (by the way TB blades are very sharp, I was wiping my car's tb off and slit my fingers, so its hard to type). Ive come to accept the power loss at startup, but I would say clean the sensors around the TB (maybe a TB cleaner) and take out the IAC plunger and spray it and give it a good, GENTLE wipe (thanks Larry) being careful not to drop it or depress the spring, and finally clean the TB. There are some thorough methods of this, but for starters I would suggest getting some cleaner on a rag and wiping all in the TB, especially around the blades. Hope this helps.

Message: Thanks guys for the replies. I am thinking now that it may be the bushing issue. I saw another post that indicated bushing problems may also cause rotor button damage. I have replaced three within the past two years. The metal contact gets knocked off the plastic button.

Message: I would remove the cap and rotor first and lift
out the pickup and check it out sometimes the
ring that holds it in place will come lose and
cause the symtoms you are describing.
Its the plastic plate on top it lifts right out
could also be the bushing
Also check your fuel presure it should be 45 to
49lbs and hold it for at least a few hours.

Message: You sound like your having bad luck with Distributors, If it makes contact with the wall and knocks off the brass piece, you got serious bushing issues. Buy another distributor, that one sounds shot.
As far as the no power in the morning, I'm thinking belly pan/intake gasket. The bellypan gasket is paper and fails quite often. Whenever you pull the plenum assembly it will be the pan on the bottom.
A quick way to check, get a falshlight, open your TB butterfly's and look down inside, if you see Oil in the bottom, the bellypan gasket is leaking oil into your Air Intake. Your engine has to burn off this Oil/Air/Fuel mixture before if reaches the proper Air/Fuel ratio.
If it don't work hit it with a hammer, Still don't werk? GET A BIGGER HAMMER!

Message: FYI....The problem with my 1992 Dakota V6 was, in fact, the distributor bushing/shaft. Replacing both resolved the problems and the little V6 has more power than it's had in several years it seems. Good luck all.

Message: Big Dawg-How hard was it to replace, and how much? I have a 97 that has the same symptoms. My rotor button is ok, but there was a lot of build up in my cap on the the points, which I think is from a weak spark. Thanks.

Message: I think I paid around $200 for parts and labor at the dealership. Was told by a couple shadetrees there was a special tool needed to remove and reinstall the bearing correctly. As I said, it has ran flawlessly ever since. Not a bad investment for a good truck. I bought an '04 Quad Cab back in August, but I can't seem to part with the old one!
