Subject: rear differential woes IP: Logged
Message: my son has a '90 dakota 2WD shortbox. Bad clunking noise coming from rear when turning. U-joints had some slop-so changed those out. It still did it anyway and was getting worse. So pulled off differential cover. I'm not an expert on names of gears, but two of the four inner gears have teeth missing. The worm gear coming in from drive shaft is fine as is it's counterpart - the big worm gear. I have pics that I could email to anyone who doesn't follow-not sure to post them here. Anyway, how hard is it to pull this apart-I see four retaining bolts on entire unit (two each on outside). Would I have to pull the axles? And where do I find what rear end this is? It's a ten-bolt cover, but I haven't found anything as to make/model, etc. What do these gears cost? Thanks in advance.

Message: Have you ever setup gears before? Im guessing not.
If not, then you should take it to someone who can do it for you.
Changing ring and pinion isnt simply taking em out and putting em in....the pinion depth, lash and all have to be set.
You get it wrong and itll be REAL loud or worse....you'll fry a new set of gears.

Message: thanks for info.............i've been told already it might be easier to slap a whole different rear end on........how difficult is that to do if I could find an identical one? I rate my mechanical skills as above average, but certainly no Mr. Goodwrench.......

Message: R&R'ing a rear is almost a no brainer, specially if its from the same kinda vehicle. All nutz and bolts.
BTW....no "MrGoodwrenches" here anyway, Dak's are MOPAR not chebbies!!! lol
