Subject: 96 Engine Light Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently inherited a 96 Dakota Sport.

Everything was fixed/checked and in working
order. O2 sensor changed, etc...

I was told that the CEL might come on. It didn't
for a while but as I was backing up it did and
has been on now for a week. I don't have a
manual for it and after looking around here
was wondering if resetting it, by taking the neg
terminal off the battery would work?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes remove the Neg cable and hold the key to start
for like 20 seconds to reset.

However before you do that turn the key on and
off 3 times than turn on and watch what code
comes up to see whats going on.

one pause one two is 12 start of diagnostics
55 is end off test its a binary code.
5 pause than 5 is 55

Okay.

After the 12 I got a 21 then a 56.

I did it three times and was definetly 56.
Strange?

So what does 21 tell me?

Thanks again.

21 is O2 sensor

Don't know what 56 is must be end of test on the
96 I know they made some changes in 96 and also
stoped using the EGR set up.

If you just had it replaced check all the
connections on the unit, if a half $ssed mechanic
replaced it for you they may have broke the
clip that holds the wires up, I have seen them
broke and the wires ended up on the exhaust
melted.

Could also have been a fluke, check the
connections, reset the computer and see if
it comes up again.

ignition for 20 secs.

Thanks for the help.
