87 - 91 is gen 1 i believe
92 - 96 is gen 2
97 - now is gen 3

91 is Gen2 also, it didnt have SMPI Mag engine but it did have the 92 styling updates.

'91 has the Gen II front end and nice square headlights. I hate those plastic light covers. They look like $hit after a couple of years. No problem on mine. I just replace burned out bulbs.
