Subject: special dealer only gear oil???

I was told by the dealer that my '00 3.9L, 5-speed Dak takes a "special manual transmission lubricant". And it was $10.65 a quart from them, WTF?!, I can't run gear oil in it? How about full synthetic?

$10! I overheard somebody talking about that also in O'Reilly's, it's a silicone based lubricant. When I heard them mention it was their '03 I went on to other things, Mine is only a '93. Sorry I can't help you more

I put RedLine MTL in my car's 5spd and it made a big difference. However, the fluid in there was pretty dark and it does have 156kmiles on it. But it shifts better and pulls a little smoother. MTL is $8 a quart. I think you could use ATF 4, which there is a lot of talk about it on this site. I would check out amsoil, redline, or any adequate synthetic.

I would definitely use the dealers lube, or an aftermarket lube that is advertised as being correct for your transmission. Lots of new lubricants have special additives.

Yeah, I would definately stay away from additives in any fluid. They may make it better short term but Ive heard bad things about them long term (etc slick 50, duralube, anything w/teflon). Plus they charge as much as $30 a quart!

as far as i know, you need a gl-5 lube for the tranny, it may need an additional modifier, (like a limited slip rear-end does) ask around on that. you can also email Mobil 1 and Amsoil and ask them. so far, the only lube not available to the aftermarket that i know if, is the ATF+4, and thats coming to a retailers shelf soon.

Amsoil makes an ATF+4 fluid,so they may also have a Manual tranny fluid.

If you are still underwarranty, use the Mopar fluid-- even after I had a NV3500 rebuilt, the tranny shop would only use the Mopar fluid-- there's nothing wrong with it-- expensive- yes--

AMSOIL Synthetic ASL or HDD for NV3500
IP: Logged

Message:

A 2000 3.9L, 5-speed Dakota?

Is the Transmission a NV3500? 95% chance that it is.

Requirement for the NV3500 is for a Synthetic Motor Oil. Verified by calling Amsoil and my local Dodge Dealer.

Amsoil ASL, or HDD ... if you choose Amsoil.

Amsoil SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (ASL)

or .....

Series 3000 Synthetic 5w-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDD)

The AX Transmission was an option but mostly found in JEEP's. This Transmission requires a 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure of the tranny designation, NV3500 sounds right. I read somewhere that it takes motor oil, but when I took the driveshaft off to change the u-joints, the fluid that came out was very dark , and thick like gear oil. It didn't have the typical sulfer smell of gear oil. I'll find out exactly what tranny is in it. I have an Amsoil dealer near me that I get my motorcycles oil from.

Amsoil Severe Gear Synthetic EP Gear Lube - Amzoil
IP: Logged

Message:

AMSOIL Introduces ---

SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic Extreme Pressure Gear Lubes

_____ _____

AMSOIL INC. of Superior, WI has updated its gear lube formulations in order to optimize its gear lubes for modern applications. SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic Extreme Pressure Gear Lubes, available in 75W-90 and 75W-140 viscosities, are ideally suited for vehicles that experience towing, hauling, steep hill driving, commercial use, racing, off-road use, rapid acceleration, stop and go driving and high ambient temperatures.

Modern vehicles are designed with more horsepower and torque than in years past, allowing them to haul and tow heavier loads. The result is higher gear loading and hotter running differentials. In addition, factors such as increased interior space and lower floor boards push axles higher into the vehicle's body, reducing air flow and increasing heat. The closer proximity of the axles to the exhaust system also effectively raises temps, while more aerodynamic body styles and air dams restrict air flow to the differentials.

SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic EP Gear Lubes deliver unbeatable power-enhancing protection, thermal stability and fuel economy in both heavy-duty and severe service operations. AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ has the film strength required to deliver all the protection high stress applications need in a fuel-saving viscosity grade at a competitive price. Recommended for use in all passenger vehicles, light trucks, SUVs, commercial trucks and race vehicles.
