How many miles?

Try reseting the Computer, pull the negative lead off the battery for 30 seconds, and see what happens...

Other than that, maybe take it in and have it looked at? Could be a lot of things from blown head gaskets (not likely) to a loose wire!

Any other symptoms?

Mine did that, but so intermittently I would put off doing anything about it, until the day that it stalled in the drive-through at the coffee shop. I replaced the battery, thought it was fine, until a few weeks later when it did it again. I replaced the spark plugs with 3923s, and new wires, end of problem.

Lots of the Gen IIIers seem to be having problems with their cat converters coming apart inside. That would cause this type of thing to happen. I do not know if DC has corrected this problem with your year but hope it helps.

Just yesterday I accidently let my battery drain down. When I went to jump start it there was no problem starting it but I had the same problem. The engine would just strait die, it wouldnt even try to run. Did this a couple of times and after that I had to reset the PCM and it did work fine. Weird though, anyone else having these problems?

Same problem. Like Kotadude21 I cleaned the TB and seemed to fix problem. I also think it has something to do with the battery I drive 6km to work not the greatest distance to let a battery charge back to full charge in the winter.

93 Dodge Dakota, V6 3.9 engine, 102k miles. Standard 5 speed. Truck stalls intemittently, have already replaced plugs, wires, cap, alternator, voltage regulator, battery tested and holds charge. Computer diagnostic check comes up with no codes. Truck still stalls intermittently.

Any ideas? Confused in Rochester, NY

Thanx.

Don't forget about that O2 sensor that's located in the exhaust, especially for the vehicle over 50,000 miles. It can cause your truck to run ruff, to rich, and loss of power.

I own a 2001 and I had a problem similar to this one. After returning home after a week long vacation. My truck would not crank; I did not have power. I tried recharging the battery, but it would not hold a charge. I replaced battery. I tried cranking engine, but it would not run unless I press acceleration pedal down. It ran very rough and there was a strong ordor of gas. When I relased the acceleration pedal the engine would die. I noticed in the Power Distribution Console (PDC in engine compartment) that the fuse for the power seats was blown. I do not have power seats. I replaced fuse and fuse burned open immediately. I figured there was a short to ground. I traced wiring back to power seat wiring harness under driver-side carpeting. Wiring harness was smashed by frame of seat, it worked itself into the harness until it shorted. This obviously occurred at time of manufacture. I repaired harness. All is well now.

I have a 99 Dak with 79000 miles. I had trouble starting it lately and had to stay on the gas to get it warmed up then it ran fine. Just got it back from Midas, they fixed a vacuum leak and now it runs better than the day I bought it.

Hey SKIP! I had the same problem at one time. I have the same truck as yours. 93 dak 3.9 2wd 5spd. I replaced everything right down to a new computer (which I still have and couldnt return). But my distributer gear and bushing went bad. It's a 60 dollar part and fixed all the stalling and running rich and all that. I can almost gaurantee thats the problem. Try it. Best of luck. This always goes for Joe!

Similar problem with my '96 but only when cold. Once the temp moved into operating range it would run fine. Sprayed a quarter of a can of Gumout into the throttle body and the problem has been solved.

Its not the throttle body or IAC as mine is doing the same thing and I have installed a new IAC, and the TB is absolutely clean as I had it off to check. Its not a bad battery either, I put a new one in and it does the same thing. Its not the alternator either. Pouring stuff down the TB is not the cure, that is mear coincidence. There is an electrical glitch inherent in the system on the Dakota and if you find it you will be the first. Check and tighten all grounds under the hood and make sure all electrical connections to all sensors and computer are tight. You will never fix it, ever, this comes and goes whenever it likes and no tech, even myself has found it yet. Good luck!

shut of while driving
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an automatic 95 dodge dakota sport. I am stationed overseas and its difficult to get parts let alone troubleshoot. Recently we had some rain storms and the waters were high. Not high enough to submerge the vehicle or engine. Since this storm my car will shut off when i am driving any where from idle to 50+ mph, sometimes it will start up right away sometimes it has to sit for an hour to overnight. I tested a spark plug connected directly to the ignition coil and no spark. I have since ordered the ignition coil and I am awaiting the part, Wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of what else to do.....Thanks
