I have a 92 2wd auto w/140k on it. Ive had it for 20k miles and have no idea on what work was done previously. Ive never dealt with a timing chain/belt, are there and clues or hints on when it starts to go out. I dont like to wait until something breaks to fix it, because sometimes it can damage other parts. So is there any way of knowing when to change it? What will happens if it breaks? Or could I just not worry about and hope it'll last forever?? My car has 155k on it and has a timing belt, and have heard if it breaks it can cause engine damage because of tight clearances of the valves. Help me. All I know is the chain connects the crank and cam and keeps them turning 2:1 in sync. Thanks

I would say at 140,000 I would give some serious
consideration to replacing the chain with a good
dobble roller like the Cloyes.

I have seen them go 250,000 but you can never tell
exactly when they will jump a tooth and run like
crap or not at all.

They usualy take a crap between 150,000 to
250,000 on the chrysler V6's and V8's they
run the same chain on both.

You should be able to hear a bit of noise in the timing cover if the timing chain is worn. However with that many miles on the engine I'd just replace it.Mopar peformance offers a nice double roller or go with the stock factory chain and gears PN 083507095 and use the PN 53021195AA chain tensioner to replace the old style thrust plate and oiler tab.

Replace it before it breaks!!
My 93 jumped time this weekend and it bent 5 pushrods and almost all the valves.
Dad is an automotive machinist and he says that's pretty common if your running down the road when it happens. If your lucky it'll do it when you kill the engine and it just won't start again.

The engine had 167,000 miles on it. I guess I can't really complain much. Only problem I've ever had.

Are bent valves and push rods the most likely damage if your timing chain breaks and if you are looking Larry from J&J Auto, what would you estimate the cost to fix at the shop.

And wouldn't this job be pretty simple, taking the intake off and then the cylinder heads. You wouldn't need to remove the engine at all right.

Thanks! In advance.

I believe you have to take the valve covers off, manifold, water pump, fan clutch, serpantine belt, ac bracket, alternatior, timing cover, and there it is, not in any particular order... I did it myself a couple months ago, saved a lot of money. If you have some extra $$$ then I would go ahead and change the plenum pan gasket as well. They start to get cracked up and leak at about 150K, at least mine did in both of mine. It is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your truck from smoking. Might as well do it since there taking off the manifold anyways. Good luck.

NOT necessary to remove the intake manifold or valve covers to r&r the timing chain and gears on 92 v6. Consider getting all new hoses, belt(s) and water pump.
