Subject: Catalytic Converter Problem??? IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys..
I'm from Brazil, and I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9 V6...
There's a hissing sound from the exhaust and no torque (I can't pass the 2.000 RPM..)...
Is this a catalytic converter problem?!
What Can I do ??
If I cut it out, the check engine light will turn on?? (I'm not sure, but I think that will cause an error in the O2 sensor...Am I right?!)
Well..thanks in advanced..
See yah!

Message: I just got my '96 Dakota out of the shop today. My catalytic converter was bad. It was making a horrible sound and my peppy V6 was feeling like a 4-banger. It took me $162 out the door to get it fixed, and less than 30 minutes. The guy did a great job, and it runs like new. There are federal and state (texas) laws against the vehicle owner or a mechanic wrongfully altering/ removing a catalytic converter. You can also cause more damage to either your engine or your exhaust system than it is worth. While I was there, a guy came in with his '99 Ram. Both of us had mid-60k miles on our trucks. The mechanic said that Dodge is bad about the converters going out around 30k miles. I'm no mechanic, but I just wanted to share what I learned today. Good luck!
