Message: Ok, so I have some issues with my 93 dakota (nothing really new). Its a 5 speed manual 4x2. I also have 2x 12inch subs in the truck and a 700watt amp (keep this in mind). Everything is stock except for 14in edelbrock air filter and I just installed a replacement muffler (oem).
Anyways...when I turn the truck on, I have to hold the key LONGER than when I first got the truck (about 7mos ago)..this issue has been happening for like a month and a half now.
While idle, my needle is at the 2nd notch (I read in another post here that idle is suppose to be like 750rpm???)..mine I would think is like 200-300 (give or take)(2nd to 3rd notch on the rpm scale) :(
I can now rev my engine upto 4k rpm while driving.
Little recap: New stuff installed in past month: Spark plugs (Bosch Plats), 14in air intake, new OEM muffler.
I know the computer learns things after 200miles...and it has been wellllll over 200 miles since all this stuff has been put in.
Thanx for help in advance ;)

Message: Auto tranny trucks idle about 750rpm, with a manual trans you should be around 500rpm. The long cranking issue could be caused by several different things. Could be ignition timing, more likely it could be a fuel pressure problem You mention the sound system, 700 watts isn't going to draw much power, i have 3 amps in my truck for a total of 1500watts and i can listem to the stereo with the truck off for quite a while without draining the battery, however if your battery is old an getting weak it might not be providing enough power for a good cranking speed, resulting in hard starting, so i would start with a battery test.

Message: Ray Kolbe...try cleaning the throttle body. If enough deposits have built up, it will slow airflow at idle.

Message: I doubt that your idling at 200-300rpm, your engine will stall below about 425rpm. Does it idle smooth or rough.
If your IAC valve is stuck partially closed that will cause hard starting and low idle also.

Message: well.....
sounds like knocking under the valves...its not a very loud sound....would the fan or TB make a noise that kinda knocks?? its a constant(ish) noise. Also it comes from both sides of the engine (under both valves is sounds).

Message: did u clean the IAC or a friend...sounds honestly like the IAC plunger was pulled out just a hair and closed the air gap making it idle slower..i know when i pushed in the IAC plunger(NEVER DO THAT!!!!)the idle jetted way up..maybe the opposite is true??

Message: 2 notches up would be like 400 rpm, but theres no guarentee the tach is accurate. If the engine idles smoothly i wouldn't worry about it, the computer controls the idle, if there was a major problem the engine light would be on.
