Subject: Auto trans fluid and filter change IP: Logged
Message: I am having my transmission fluid and filters changed for the first time (122,000) I heard that this may cause me to have transmission problems. Is this a true statement? Any advice if this is true? Bought truck used and knew the original owner.
Tranny and O/D is fine as of now.

Message: Cant say it is true, per say. But I can tell you within 100 miles of me changing mine, 250.00 worth of modules, and solenoids. Now it is all better. My problem was it wouldn't upshift from first, started flashing 1764, 1762 codes. Good luck

Message: If your transmission has routine buildup within it, then you may experience some problems after fluid/filter service is performed. Transmission fluid is like the "sandpaper" of lubricants. Fresh fluid will tend to scrub some of these deposits loose and may cause the filter to be clogged or even worse, some of the contamination may get lodged within the valve body, torque covertor, etc. Routine intervals are best of course, but when that is not possible, you might be better off NOT changing it when it has been neglected for so long.

Message: Most times when problems happen is when you get
a power flush, very rare on just a fluid and
filter change.
Why did you wait so long shoud do it every 30 to
40 thousand miles and never worrie about it.
What happens is it will blast particles of metal
lose and mess up the valve body and passage ways.
Then you will have to drop the valve body and
clean it, hopefuly nothing in the passage ways.
Be sure they use an ATF +4 fluid in the trans or
Amsoil universal is what I run.

Message: Larry, or anyone who cares to reply.
I have 75K on my 99' 3.9 w/auto tranny without ever changing the fluid/filter. I stopped by a place today that does brakes and minor repairs/maintenance. He quoted me $89 for a fluid flush and $130 to drop the pan and change the filter. I had never heard of flushing the system before today and was a little sceptical. He said the backflushing will clean out the filter anyway. Are these fair prices? Which one do I want to do based on my mileage and NO towing? The sales/counterguy asked about how it is shifting to determine something. The DAK shifts pretty good but there is a wierd shift that occurs at mid throttle or higher, I think between second and third gear ( I should pay attention). I though intensedak posted something about a crudded up sensor that causes this, but now I can't find the post.

Message: At this point I would just get a filter and fluid.
As far as back flushing the system and saying it
would clean the filter is crazy, all the crap
would be in your pan and you would just suck it
right back and plug the filter.
Just take it to a good shop have them drop the
pan change the filter and adjust the bands and
go from there. $50 to $100 no more than that to
do this job.
This will give you about 50% new fluid and if the
trans works ok just do the filter and fluid again
after 10 to 15,000 miles and you will be like
95% new fluid.
There are 2 solenoids in the trans but don't be in a rush
to replace them.
The odd shift might be what we all have there is one less
clutch plate in the V6 trannies and it just takes a while
to shift because of the added distance. A shift kit
will make this shift faster and less noticeable.

Message: Thanks Larry,
I'll try to find a good shop to go to. This place wouldn't even adjust the bands if they dropped the pan. He said I needed to go to a dodge dealer for that. Crap, my haynes manual says how to do it so it can't be exactly proprietary information. :)
I am going to analyze the shifting next time I drive it. I think we may be talking about separate issues. Thanks again.

Message: The bands take about 5 min each to adjust.
All you need to do as I do is use a small wrench
that fits and snug them down zero play and back
them off so many turns depending on application.
I have never used a torque wrench in 30 years
adjusting bands.
I have rebuilt and adjusted so many trans bands
its a very easy thing to do than just either
put some dia chem or file or center punch a
small mark on them and count the turns you back
them off.
You can get a filter and gasket set from autozone
for $10 and do it yourself. If it still shifts
good don't even mess with the bands.
you need aprox 6 qts fluid to change out the
filter and refill on the Daks
I never do unless there are definite problems, its
the first thing you do change fluid, filter, adjust
and than test the operation.
I never just say you need a new trans before
doing these things and it saves people a lot
of unnecessary emptying of there wallets.
Unless it don't move and the fluid smells burnt and
a nasty looking brown color.

Message: Yeah when my problems started, I pulled the stick to check the fluid, it looked like a deep fried bubbly mess, almost like cooked brake fluid. This was the 2nd time I changed the trans fluid, 108,000 to date. The trans not upshifting was kinda fun, for a second or two.
J and J: what type of shift kit do your reccomend for our daks, and should I even temp fate, now that my trans is working good? Thanks for all of your informative posts.

Message: I am running the TransGo, the mopar shift kit
is also made by TransGo
I put mine in at 60,000
Just take your time and they are not that hard
to install, on the drivers side of the trans is
the model trans you have or just take your vin
number to a dealer and they can tell you which
one you have.
Reason is there are differant changes depending
on the trans you have.
