Message: You will not notice a cold air intake much but
they do help with milage and response.
Hot air will not harm your engine it just cuts
back the timing and fuel.
Cold air opisite adds timing and fuel better
response and power, gas milage.

Message: get the dealership cover and make the cold air yourself it will save you money and work better because you can choose the size of filter and piping

Message: The stock unit will work just fine if you use a
K&N Drop in filter replacement.
The K&N will be a little better and look better
under the hood, The cold air tube also flows
better than the ripple design of the stock tube.

Message: And remember as j and j auto said, cold air is better. People with "cold air intakes" that are really hot air intakes because the have a filter sitting under the hood open to the hot under hood air. A true "cold air intake" will only pull air from outside of the engine compartment. So there are quite a few cold air intake kits you can buy that would be better if they were true cold air intakes.

Message: Using a borrowed OBDII monitor I made a test where I watched the air intake temp (I have my IAT in the intake tube of my CAI). With a open filter in the engine bay and a nice hole in front of it in the core support, I still noticed a problem. It was about 65 degrees that day and at a light the IAT read over 100 degrees. I then went down a road at 40 mph and watch readings drop, but it took a mile to get into the 70 degree range. Lots of hot air under the hood.
I built a box around my filter to enclose it so the only air it can get is from the hole in the core support. I have not yet borrowed the OBDII monitor again to see what changes it has made but driving it seems better and more responsive. I am holding off doing the OBDII monitor untill I do some other mods to check on as well.

Message: when you stop even a cold air lose some power because the air is not moving around it, the more air you can get moving around something the better

Message: I used to have a "cold air intake" with the filter sitting right in the engine capartment. It ran ok, but i noticed it was a bit sluggish when it heated up, so I searched around and found a perfect place for the filter to sit. Here take a look at my intake. http://www.cardomain.com/id/shiper4 Ive found it to work really great. The only problem is im going to have to fabricate a piece of plastic so when it rains the water doesnt get all on the filter.

Message: The intake pipe sat right behind the passenger side headlight. A hole a little bit bigger than 3 inches had to be cut on the horizontal piece of metal so the pipe could travel down to the bumber. Also dont forget to have a rubber gromet around the pipe where it touches the metal, otherwise you will hear metal hitting metal.

Message: That's a pretty common place for the filter to sit. That is where the stock intake usually sits. There is plenty of room and you can get direct cold air to it right from the grill. Some kits even come with a plastic "enclosure" that sits around the filter so you can only get cold air and not any of the hot air from the engine.
On some vehicles/kits they pull the air from the wheel well, tires get hot.
A friend has a stock infiniti G35, he is looking at having the dealer install a cold air intake, it puts the filter right by the headlight as well. That kit does not have the plastic enclosure. Oh yeah, dealer charges like $600 for the kit and install. I told him to do it himself, he's all afraid of voiding the warranty whereas if the dealer installs it, they will warrent it and honor the factory warranty.

Message: Well Dan if you take a look at my site you can see the filter doesnt not sit behind the headlight. Rather it sits down in the bumber where the cooler air would be. The pipe runs infront of the headlight.
