Subject: Changing Rear Diff Lube IP: Logged
Message: What is the proper procedure for changing the rear diff lube on a 2000 Dakota? Do you have to remove the diff cover or is there a drain plug? Also, where do you put the lube in the diff housing?
Thanks for all the help

Message: Yes you need to remove the cover, No Drain
You can either replace the gasket or usually they
don't rip and you can just use a light coat of
silicone and bolt it back on.
There should be a rubber plug in the cover you
remove to fill, they take around 2 quarts than
drive it for a while and recheck and top off.

Message: from the looks of it, pull the cover and let it drain, there should be a rubber fill hole cover on the diff cover, on the right side just below axle center line, fill till it over flows, and you're done. btw use black RTV to re seal the diff cover.

Message: You can also use a suction pump to drain the diff if you don't want to remove the diff cover and deal with gaskets and silicone. Just get a hand suction pump with a short section of tubing. Pull the rubber plug on the diff housing and push the tube in and start sucking out the diff fluid. Make sure you get to the bottom of the diff with the tubing to get all the fluid. Fill the fluid to the same level that was in the diff before you sucked it out using the same hole.

Mac Dak,
I'd start by finding the lubrication section in your owner's manual.
Agree with Larry @ J&J Auto, ... you need to remove the cover.
No disrepect to Canadian Eh, but pumping out the differential from "any" drain-plug is dubious.
The worst wear particles will stay at the bottom and you'll have a tough time checking condition (metal/water content & pattern). Too blind of an operation for me. Not that lube shops don't do it all the time to save time. Remove the cover!
