I drive a 2002, v6 Dakota with only 7k miles. The other day I noticed that the carpeting on passenger side was soaked. So, I pulled it up and wet vacd at least 6 cups of water from the foam beneath carpet. I traced the leak to a hose running from what looks like a compressor under the dash through the fire wall and into the engine compartment. Anyone had similar problems with a 2002? What is the REAL diagnosis? Will the dash have to be disassembled to fix? It's under warranty, but what a pain.

Is it water or coolant? If it is water(cold water) then you need to route a hose out the firewall. I had to do this in my Aspire, get a piece of heater hose and a nozzle that stops one end and is like a straw on the other. My floorboard was getting soaked, but took 30min and about 5 bucks and no problem. But if coolant good luck. 2002 should have a warranty so give the dealer hell. If not I know it is $600 for a mechanic to fix a heater core in a Ram.

Just water. There is NO anti freeze mixed in with the leakage. I dumped the wet vacd water into a glass container just to be certain. No anti freeze was mixed in. The defroster/heater/ac also work just fine. No blowing anti freeze out of vents or anything like that. Thanks again for your thoughts.

When does it leak? Mine only leaked when the AC was on. I dont think it would be leaking all the time, just when the compressor is turned on. Should be an easy fix.

If it leaks only after using the ac, it's the ac drain hose either plugged up or off. If it leaks after a rain, look for a body seam in the far corner under the plastic cowl by the heater/ac air intake. Both common problems. Good luck.

Hey thanks. I actually found several VERY long strands of conversation from past months on this board, with regards to the very same problem. I think it only leaks after the a/c has been on. I am going to seal the gasket with silicone, and install an extra length of pipe to the a/c cool drain nozzle sticking out of the firewall.

Look at your lemon laws for what state you are in, becuase the value of your dokota droped. Why, will would you buy a truck with a water leak? I know that wont Get back with me pease.

The leakage is coming from your AC. The first step is to make sure the drain is not clogged with any debris. You can find the drain by following the tube for the transmission dipstick down. The drain is behind the first heat shield you come to. It’s about a ¾in. black tube. If the drain is clear of obstructions, then your next step is to obtain a 90deg. elbow and some more hose and rout the drain water directly to the ground. If this doesn’t solve your problem then you probably have a leak further up in the HVAC system.

Of course if your truck is still under warranty, let the dealer have a crack at it first. Make sure that an incident report is logged of all the problems. You can insure this will be done if you call customer service at 1-800-992-1997 with your VIN.

DanW, let us know how your trip to the dealer comes out for this problem. I didn't take my truck into the dealer because I didn't want to go through the hassle of being without it for a couple of days, getting rides, etc. I just pulled up the carpet and wet-vac'ed as much moisture as I could get out of it, then let it dry for several days over the long weekend. I sprinkled some baking soda in the pad area to take out any residual moisture and put it back down. I installed the elbow on the drain tube, but it still doesn't seem to drain enough water in my opinion. If it leaks again, I'll take it in. Thanks a lot for the customer service phone #, I'll check into that.

hey the dealer will pay for a rental intell you get yours back, up to three days any longer they will pay.
taking your carpet out is a good ideal but problem is that the hole carpet is wet. I have taken my out and let hang for a week and the carpet was not dry after that. If you go to the dealer make sure you get anything they say on paper.

On most vehicles the hose gets clogged with debris and everything backs up and overflows onto the carpet. I usually shoot some compressed air up the hose and stand back because about 2 gallons of water will drain out. Sounds like there may be another problem on these dakotas with that hose leaking but i would start with the simple stuff.

Ryan, i've never heard of a dealer refusing to fix a problem if the trucks under warrenty, even if the techs don't know how to fix it they will usually call some field engineers to look at it. If it's clogged with debris that may not be covered under warrenty.

jon. there are some ways that the dealer could give you a hard time geting somthing fixed. one way is that water leaks can take up to 1-30 hours or more, and the dealer will only get payed for 3 hours of that work. the other way is: say if you took your truck in to dealer (A) twice and they couldn't find a leak, but they said they did. so dealer (A) is the one that got the contract first. but when you take it to dealer (B) for the same problem then dealer (B) wouldn't get paid for the repares. and this is whats has happen to me.
