Message: I have a 96 Dakota and the compressor went out today. Has anyone replaced this themselves or is it too much for the home mechanic? Does anyone know the going rate or where I can find a cheap one?

Message: Actually replacing the part isn't too bad but you should also install an inline filter because if your old compressor shot any metal chips into the system you don't want them to end up in the new compressor. Also you need to evacuate the system before refilling it so you would have to take it to a shop that has an a/c machine. Remember to add refrigerent oil to the new compressor when you hook it up.
