I went to inspection the other day and the truck failed the emissions test for NOx. This is in NJ and I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem. The level was supposed to be around 800 but, mine was well over 1600. I had the CAT replaced about three months ago which was covered under the warranty for less than 80,000 miles however now I'm over by about 3,000 miles so I think I'm screwed as far as what the dealer will do to help. Any way any information as to what I should look at would be appreciated. Dakota sport 4x4 V6 5spd

The cat doesn't do anything with Nox emissions. Nox only forms when your combustion temperatures are above 2500 degrees. If you have excessive nox you either have a problem with the engine running too hot, too lean, or your ignition and/or cam timing is off. A defective EGR valve will also cause excessive Nox, if your truck has an EGR valve.

What? Jon, did you really intend to say the Cat does not contribute to NOx reduction? Perhaps you were thinking of the original 2 way cats from the 70's/early 80's. The 3-way which has been standard for 20 or so years absolutely does reduce NOx.

The 1st part of the cat is called the reduction catalyst. Using platinum and rhodium, it helps reduce the NOx emissions. When an NO or NO2 molecule contacts the catalyst, the catalyst rips the nitrogen atom out of the molecule and holds on to it, freeing the oxygen in the form of O2. The nitrogen atoms bond with other nitrogen atoms that are also stuck to the catalyst, forming N2. This N2 is realeased, but is not harmful.

Anyway, for those with high NOx I recommend replacing EGR valve and O2 sensor, cleaning everything out..then retest. 85-90% of times this will do it. Cats SHOULD last 15 years if the O2 sensor is doing it's job.

Keep on Truckin!

I had the exact same thing happen to me during my vehicle inspection ('98 Dakota, V6, 40,000 miles). My level was about 1500 vs the expected and required 800. If it is the Catalytic converter that contributes to this, is a fix covered under the warranty. If so, is there a Service Bulletin associated with it?

Tim,
I know from experince that the CAT is covered until 80,000 miles by the federal Government. This is my third CAT on this truck. I have seen a post before that mentioned if the tune-up was done late that the CAT might go. I learned the hard way.

Well sorry to take so long to say what happened but, was on vacation. Anyhow I took the truck to a ERF (Emission repair facility),its a NJ thing and the mechanic that looked at it said it is the CAT. I told him the CAT on the truck only has about 3,500 miles on it.
He said to go back to the dealership with the bad cat and see what they say. Meantime I'm over the 80,000 mile mark so I'm screwed into the cost of the new CAT. At least this one will be OEM however this is the fourth CAT on the truck now.

Eric,
I'm not sure about the "states" but here in Canada the warrenty on parts from the dealer is usually 1 year/20,000k's (12,000mi). If you got the work done at a dealer you should be covered for parts and labour. If it was done outside the dealer, but you got the parts from the dealer, they should be covering the parts if you have the receipt, but you are on the hook for the labour. Any other reputable parts dealer (aftermarket) should have some sore of warrenty on there parts.
Hope this help.
Ronin

Your new CAT should have a 12,000 mile warranty from the dealer. Don't back down from those a$$ holes. Take them the ERF paperwork and the paperwork you received when the dealer did the CAT replacement and prove to them that you shouldn't have to pay for a new CAT.

I too have failed due to high NOx. Last year my '99 passed by the skin of it's grill, but this year she was failing miserably. My reading was coming in at 4.50; the limit here in NY is 2.50. The inspecter informed me that I failed twice but wanted to try something. He clicked off the O/D and the reading dropped to 0.76!! Well below the 2.50 limit.
The Mechanic couldn't explain to me why the O/D would elevate NOx. Does anyone have any ideas? Is this an indication of other problems? Could this be why I get such crappy mileage?

Don't know about the O/D but, Dodge is paying me the cost for the new cat that was installed. Another question I have is has anyone had problems trying to find the u joint for the rear connection on their dodge? I went to three places to find the right part and it wasn't what is listed in the book for the 99 Dakota 4x4 V6 manual trans. Steel shaft. The part manufacturer is precision for the replacement.
